I've been kind of wondering what direction everyone wants to take their characters. Whatever the final decision on how things work, it'll be comparatively less restrictive than the old CP system. What kind of units would you lead? What ideas do you have?
Here's mine.
Friedrich Hautt
Current Command: SS-Grenadier Platoon
Desired Command: SS-Panzergrenadier HMG Section.
Hautt is only a junior sergeant. It's time to reduce the size of his command. I'd like to relegate him to a less involved command, and a section of two HMGs is a useful element that fits the bill. Character-wise, I need to get him introduced to more people. My greatest regret is that my only Hautt/Heiko thread died without being finished. Might be cool to do it over again, and get to know some of the other interesting characters in the German faction. Foreigners just get stabbed in the stomach, Heiko-style. Krsh krsh. Might move him back to Das Reich, which I like a little better as a unit.
Ernst Bahn
Current Command: None!
Desired Command: Fallschirmjäger Company
My only thread as Ernst (with Mac) never really got rolling much. I put a lot of work into fleshing him out as a character, and want to put as much effort into his unit. Since we may very well see drops and airlandings soon, this would be a good character to try some of that with. I had the idea of using the FJ Company as the nucleus of a Kampfgruppe, a mixed unit with whatever people want to experiment with. Anti-tank guns, infantry guns, mortars, motorized infantry, mechanized infantry, combat engineers, you name it.
Jan Nordmann
Current Command: Nada
Desired Command: Panther Platoon
I've never gone further than getting his app approved. Kind of shot myself in the foot when I decided to put him with the Grossdeutschland Division since they fought exclusively on the Eastern Front from 1941 onwards, but whatev. While I eventually want to get cozy with a platoon of Panther tanks, I'd prolly start with Panzer IIIs and get the hang of tank combat before upgrading gradually. If anyone needed armor support, I'd be happy to offer a tank or two.
Sō Hiroyasu
Current Command: Nihil
Desired Command: Special Naval Landing Force
Commanding a force of Japanese soldiers in the Pacific should have been difficult enough, but I figured that going overboard couldn't hurt. The SNLF are the Japanese Marines. They're not as well trained or equipped as their Army counterparts, and often have tougher missions, but compensate with sheer balls-out manliness. Not literally, which is gross, but meaning that these guys are happier if they do die, so long as they kill a few white devils first. That takes huevos of steel. With a company of nearly 300 guys, I could probably get more than a few players PTSD from nightmarish jungle battles. Banzai!
Anton Trubachev
Current Command: Motor-Rifle Company
Desired Command: Penal Company
Leading an entire Soviet infantry company is a respectable job. Whip them into line and throw them at the enemy line, occasionally shooting a few to teach them a lesson. Problem? I don't want respectable. I had the idea of leading a small punishment unit. You know, those guys forced through minefields at gunpoint to redeem themselves after screwing something up? Yeah. I thought it might be cool to use such a unit in a campaign. Prolly would offer some of em as fodder for other Soviets needing human shields for their assaults. Working on a system to govern how often and how many replacements the unit gets to keep it from being an annoyingly impenetrable auto-repleneshing wall of guys. No heavy weapons except a couple of HMGs to shoot deserters with. No AT weaponry, few grenades, minimal ammunition. Hell wearing red stars.
So what kind of ideas are swimming around your grey matter? What would you change about your current characters? Where would you take new or unused characters? Has anyone thought about breaking ground in the Pacific, or having characters try roles that haven't been done before? I could see Laya at the head of the first unit of T-34s, grinding out those tough victories that caused 80% of German casualties east of Berlin. Or D'Dario leading a Plotone di Paracadutisti to cause trouble in the Balkans and North Africa.
