First to fight, the German invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 marks the starting point of the Second World War in Europe. Several weeks later, a Soviet invasion from the East doomed Poland's flagging defense against the Germans and her allies in the West. Site of viscous fighting between German and Soviet forces as well as active resistance by the Polish against both sides throughout the war.

An oft overlooked portion of conflict, many Balkan and Central European nations began the war as allies of Germany, with Romania of particular importance to Germany for her oil fields. Through invasion and repeated coups, these nations were subjected to brutal violence, changing hands often and seeing a myriad of resistance groups spring up that fought each other as often as they fought their German and Soviet occupiers.

Site of some of the most brutal and desperate fighting of the war. The titanic might of the Soviet Union and Germany ground against each other at such infamous places as Leningrad, Kursk, Moscow, Sevastopol, and Stalingrad. Tens of Millions, soldiers and civilians, died directly and indirectly as a result of the bitter fighting.

Prized by all sides for their mineral wealth and strategically important location, the Scandinavian countries of Denmark and Norway were subjected to invasion and occupation by Germany, while Sweden was threatened into neutrality. Meanwhile Finland managed to pragmatically play all sides to maintain her independence, coming to blows with both the Soviet Union and Germany at various points.
