Felix took a deep breath through his nose, his nostrils flaring with the bitter scent of war. Smoke choked the air, mixed with the rancid odor of several rotting corpses of unlucky central European civilians slaughtered by the mixed air raids of several days. Both sides had decided to bomb the shit out of eachother, not caring what happened to the rapidly evacuating civilians fleeing the area. Luckily, the hazy weather today ment no bombing raids so the Germans had seen this as an ideal oppourtunity to take back some of the territory rapidly taken by the American 3rd Infantry Division, which the SS troopers had grown to despise in the past few weeks. They where losing the Balkans and Central Europe fast, and it was key for the Allies to take because it cleared a path straight into the heart of the Reich.
Felix and his men weaved their way through the ruined remains of some defaced city, quick and agile through the rubble under the constant fear of a sudden artillery strike. Their K9 unit, Daemon, trotted alongside SS-Schutz Stauber, who clutched a the animal's leather leash along with his rifle. The young man had been attending Veternarian school in Vienna when he joined up, and the squad had decided to grant him control of the dog. He seemed to have a natural connection with animals, and the fluffy haired German sheperd seemed to listen whenever he whispered unheard commands into its ear.
The eight German soldiers where to rendevous with a rookie sniper and his squad somewhere around here, so Felix kept his ears pricked at all time to hopefully hear the tapping of two empty shells designated to signal the SS men before whatever sound American troops made. Ironicly, it was not a sound that made Felix thrust his fist into the air, but instead a feeling. Something about the eerie block that they where stationed at made him halt. His bloodshot icy blue eyes swivled in his skull, looking for anything other than a dust cloud wisping through a gap between two buildings. They stopped behind the bigger of the two buildings, and Felix spoke in a hushed whisper. "Theres something here that doesn't feel right. I want two volunteers to go on a little scouting mission for me. Anyone?" The hands of Private Krass and Corporal Windkloppel went up, and the corners of Felix's mouth curled fearsomely as he explained what the two brave SS men would do. "You see that shop to the south? Creep over there and take point through the door, if anything comes at you when you cross the street, dive into the foxholes and keep your heads down and we'll cover you so you can get out. Got it? Go!" The two troopers snaked out from behind the building in a low crouch, moving at a careful pace in a diagonal line toward the southern building. Their rifle barrels jutted out infront of them, long Imperial Bayonets mounted.
