Welcome to Issuing Orders, A Second World War roleplaying game.
So you've found us and now you're probably wondering what a "Second World War roleplaying game" actually entails. This thread is here to help answer that question.
What is Issuing Orders?
Issuing Orders is a Second World War roleplaying game. We roleplay events roughly within the period of 1939 to 1945, though this isn't a strict rule. The scope of the game is global and free-flowing with no set "cannon" plot, timeline or setting; and all characters are original creations of our players with none being any more important than any other. You may have your characters interact where and when ever you feel so long as it makes sense and fits roughly with the actual history; There aren't going to be any German invasions of the US or Britain, etc. We pride ourselves on an attention to detail and general desire to be as realistic and plausible as possible. Independent research is highly encouraged.

What kinds of characters are allowed on Issuing Orders?
The short answer is: Any.
There are almost no rules about who your character can and cannot be. Want to be a German soldier fighting for the Fatherland? Sure. Want to be a damsel-in-distress is Paris? Sure. The only restrictions you'll find in character creation is our request that your character be an original creation and not a historical figure; and what nation your character may fight for, as of now the available nations are the United Kingdom (and her Commonwealth), The United States, The Soviet Union, Germany, Italy, and Japan. However, even though your character must fight under the flag of one of the aforementioned nations, your character doesn't have to originate from said nations; Your Finnish character can fight the Soviets under the German flag or any other combination so long as you provide adequate justification. Also note that due to IO's heavy combat focus, the vast majority characters will be the rank of Captain or lower as Captain is the highest rank that would regularly be in the midst of battle; higher ranks become more administration positions than combat positions.

We have two types of roleplays here:
- The Neutral RP:
"Neutrals" as we call them are your typical roleplay with two or more characters interacting at a certain place and time within the game. There are no restrictions here except that no combat between opposing armies may occur unless it is discussed, detailed, and agreed upon by all participating parties. Generally most Neutrals occur in territory friendly to the participating characters, but again, this is not a rigid rule of any kind. Neutral threads all take place in the "Non-Combat" category of boards which are divided between Allied and Axis sections and then further subdivided into "Homefront" areas with encompass cities, towns, etc within the home nations of the combatants; and "Militarized" areas which encompass bases, encampments, frontline and rear areas.

- The Hostile RP:
This is where IO really shines and becomes a unique roleplaying experience. In addition to the tame, normal Neutral RPs, IO is home of what we call "Hostile", or more commonly "Battle", threads. These are threads in which two or more players from opposing armies clash in battle. The events within a battle are not planned or agreed upon before hand and play out like a chess match between players, with each player taking turns writing posts that detail the moments and actions of their troops. Between each players turn a Moderator will review the post and write his own Moderation Post (or "Mod") which will detail what actions made were successful the the consequences thereof. This moderation creates a fair and, relatively, balanced battle experience. More detailed information can be found here and you can review any number of completed battles here.

- The Shop
To supplement and enhance the Hostile aspect of IO, the site boasts a robust "shop" in which players can purchase soldiers, vehicles, and aircraft for battle and equipment with which to arm themselves and their troops using a currency earned through roleplaying on the site called "Command Points", commonly referred to as "CP". CP is earned at a steady rate in Neutral RPs and earned at a much higher rate as a reward for the risk taken at the end of Battle RPs.

- Non-Player Characters
As a part of the Shop, players may purchase Non-Player Character soldiers, or NPCs. These are characters purchased with CP and armed with equipment that is also purchased. They are available in a number of tiers of experience, and can be armed however their purchasing player wishes so long as they have the CP to purchase that equipment. NPCs can and will die... frequently. If you create an NPC that you become particularly attached to, it might be wise to keep them out of battle. In both Neutral and Hostile RP's it the sole responsibility of the owning player to RP their actions, thoughts, feelings.
- Military Units
As an extension of roleplaying individual soldiers, players with Characters of an Officer rank may choose, with Staff approval, to create a player-run military unit. These units serve to further facilitate roleplay between characters by giving them common ground (or rivalries) as well as serving as storage for the various NPCs acquired by characters. Military units are entirely in the hands of the players running them without staff involvement. It is also highly recommended that you join a military unit as promotions are also roleplayed and in the hands of higher ranked characters, to which you will only have access if you join one.
