Character Name: Victoria Annaliese Docherty (ATA pilot)
Rank: you can choose XD
Nationality: British---German decent
History:
Current Age: 18 turning 19
Victoria has a light build---a slim figure but is not what you would call curvy. She is about 5'5 in height, pale complexion (like any other British European)---soft full lips, ashen pink cheeks and dark brown wavy hair that falls about shoulder length, framing her slender face. She has deep dark brown eyes that seem like daggers if you happen to tick her off.
Victoria lived a very sheltered life in England. Her family owned a small farm in Yorkshire, which to her seemed like a prison. Her father although cold and rather strict. His personality towards his children changed dramatically after losing Victoria's mother (Nora) to sickness. Although she holds some respect for her father (James); she craved more than anything for freedom.
The only one who understood this was her older brother Nathan. He was a restless individual...anything he did she wanted to do (She's a bit of a tonboy) and she loved him dearly.
When Victoria turned 16 the British joined the 2nd world war, in just a few months Nathan left to join the British military.
A few months into the war her brother ended up dying in action. After learning this her father went into a depression and began drinking (to the point he'd come home drunk and beat her). Plagued with a ever present sense of loneliness, and uncertainty... So she began to dream when her life may change....to be free and for the strength to meet her own destiny.
When she got the chance to join the ATA (Air Transportation Auxiliary unit) she seized the moment to serve her country. Although her father was against it, she joined anyway. She constantly tends to push herself to be more than "just her best" to earn respect in her father's eyes.
Personality:
Victoria has quite a fiery-in your face personality...if she doesn't like you...well you will know right away if she doesn't(If given the chance she will punch you). She can be rather blunt when she speaks and rather harsh with hints of sarcasm in her tone (she usually is sarcastic). She is short tempered (when someone speaks ill of her family or what she believes in), yet she is quite naive, rebellious, single minded and head strong. Usually she does stuff without thinking.
Mother's Name: Nora Docherty
Father's Name: James Docherty
Older Brother: Nathan Docherty
Writing Sample: The year is 1942, Victoria is thinking about her brother and deciding to join the ATA. Yep.
"Remember Victoria,...you are the only one who can determine your own destiny..."
That voice, that familiar warmth behind it....it was unmistakable...it was Nathan's voice. It seemed only like yesterday Victoria had spent time with her older brother Nathan; sitting under oak trees--listening as the wind rustled through the leaves--his voice clear as day, echoing like a bird mimicking a light hearted tune. Victoria opened her eyes feeling a sense of melancholy...her chocolate colored eyes shifted around to find no sign of her brother. I'm imagining things again... she thought bitterly, as her eyes gazed up at the cloudless sky above.
How badly did she want to just sprout wings and fly. Far. Far away from her father...taste the sweetness of freedom on her tongue! How she envied the birds that flitted in the green canopy above her head. Their songs of sweet contentment melding into songs of the heart. If she was a bird...she could fly away from her abusive drunkard of a father...fly far away into the endless blue skies.
With her hand outstretched towards the sky; she let out a content sigh as the light of the sun danced on the leaves above...illuminating through crevices of her pale hand. Her dark eyebrows furrowed slightly...thinking about her brother. How could she have known that it would be the very last time she would see her dear brother?
The year was 1939, a year she would never forget...the day Great Britain declared war. Within a few months, Victoria lost her brother--she could still remember the day a man from the army bringing them the news of her brother's death. The image of Nathan dying alone...was burned into her mind. Wondering helplessly if anyone was there to mourn for him...or even stayed during his last moments. The mere thought sent an overwhelming sadness over Victoria.
Though through her sadness...she refused to cry... she allowed it to feed her hunger to gain power...power, to prove her father that she was as good as any man...she knew sheer will and determination wasn't enough to impress him in his eyes. She was not Nathan after all. She couldn't replace her beloved brother that she lost. He was gone from this world...no longer will she hear words of comfort or encouragement.
"You write your own destiny....huh.." muttered Victoria lethargically as she dropped her outstretched hand down to her side.
The sweet smell of the grass and dirt below her tickled her nose while the heat of the sun lazily beat against her pale skin. As the afternoon sun rose her eyes wondered on the canopy of leaves, she recalled seeing a picture or some sort of article in the Picture Post talking about the ATA. It was of First Officer Maureen Dunlop a woman pilot serving as an officer in the Air Transportation Auxiliary.
Victoria remembered how beautiful the woman looked...and more importantly depicting the sense of freedom Victoria was searching for. It was so close...all she needed to do was volunteer...freedom was so close ...so close she could touch it with her finger tips. The sound of a bird suddenly rustling through the leaves caught Victoria's attention. She watched in awe as it's small wing spread apart as it took flight and into the air it went. Victoria sat silently watching the chirping bird disappear into the distance.
She bit her lower lip slightly contemplating on her decision to join the ATA or not, Hell...I only have one life to live. thought Victoria as she sucked in a deep breath. She sat up dusting off pieces of grass and dirt off her plain-faded sundress.
A look of determination crossed her pale features as she got to her feet, "Well, Nathan...I'm writing my own destiny." she said out loud.
A small smirk crossed her lips as she began to make her way towards town.
