Character History:
Casper Heniz was born in Munich on 23rd July 1919 amidst a country still devastated by war a year on. His mother had died in childbirth and his father had not enough money to keep him so had given him away to an elderly couple who were happy to take him in. The Weimar Years were rolling into motion, Germany was steadily getting back on to its feet and people were happy especially with relationships improving with other European countries such as France, Britain and Russia.
Casper grew, a happy childhood with all the presents he could want and the love from the elderly couple. Soon though they both died of old age, and he – at the age of 15 – moved to Berlin. By now it was 1934; the Nazis had been in power for a year and had made vast changes to Berlin – flags everywhere with swastikas, black and red and white. Men in uniforms marched and patrolled the streets daily. But Casper went underground to the clubs and bars that were still in use. Here, he worked as a rent-boy, influenced by the men who he saw as friends but were only in it for the money. He was young, and naive of the dangers of the Nazis and the wider world. He had thought what he had been doing was right and fine, it got him money and he was able to go on holidays with clients to richer parts of Germany.
He did this for 2 years, it was now 1936 and the Nazis were clapping down on the gay clubs and bars. Casper had been told by friends that “their kind” was being taken away. Casper laughed this off, he was a growing, strong 17 year-old, and was confident in himself that the idea of a bunch of people dressed in uniform stopping him from earning money was ludicrous. He carried on; there were many people in Germany – men – who still went to the bars he worked at and still were up for paying the boys who still did it as a living. However, one night, Casper realised just how close the Nazis were, and how dangerous they were.
It had been a normal night, drinking and chatting and playing cards with clients in his usual haunt of an underground bar – the door had been left ajar by someone and whoever was on watch that night had not shown up or had forgotten – a band of SS soldiers had walked straight in, guns raised at the men inside – it had been frightening. Casper had been able to get away just, he had nearly been shot at but had escaped, down the secret tunnels that led under the buildings. He had gone back the next day to the bar and found that it was deserted and a mess. He had been completely lost then, not understanding what to do until he saw one of his friends at a shop of a Jewish shopkeeper – dressed in the uniform of the SS. He had spoken with his friend, shocked but was told that the life of an SS soldier was a lot better than what they had had been. So, Casper decided to bite the bullet and joined up to the SS in 1937, at the age of 18. When war broke out in 1939, he’d been at the backburner of most of the SS operations and had not been involved in the fighting – he wasn’t enjoying his time as an SS soldier, he had preferred the life he had had back in Berlin. But he knew he couldn’t go back to that. He would fight for Germany, a confused 20 year old, entering a world he had no idea of.
