You're gunning for the top tier certification so this is going to be less focused on simple factual questions and more on situations in which I will test your reasoning.
You must pass at least 75% of the test. Each section is weighted.
Please post as soon as you view this. You will be given four (4) days to complete the test, starting from the moment you post.
Section One: US Army Signal Corps (25% total)
These are just a few questions on the history of the use of signals in the US Army. All I need is the bare answer, no flowery stuff.
1.During what war did the US Army Signal Corps first play a part?
2.Where is the headquarters of Signal Corps?
3.What is the motto of the Signal Corps and what is it's English translation?
4. What was the actual profession of the very first Signal Officer?
5. Name two of the three methods first used by the Signal Corps. (regardless of how successful they were)
Section Two: Situations (25% each)
Let me be clear right off, there are no set right answers. I'm looking for your thought process and reasoning.
Situation One
You've been ordered to assault this portion of the front line and been given permission to call in one type of support before you attack. You and your men are positioned behind the ridges (A) and the enemy is entrenched just inside the tree line (B). There is only a slight breeze but thick low clouds hang over the battlefield.
- The types of support available are: Artillery (Three 105mm howitzers) or Air Support (Two P-47's armed with 8 high explosive rockets and and one 150 lb bomb each).
1. Weigh the pros and cons of both support options. Include the effects, if any, the weather will have. (paragraph or bulleted list form; whatever you're most comfortable with)
2. Based on your analysis, which one would you use?[/color]
Situation Two
Your division has been attempting to assault this town all morning but you've been receiving heavy fire from multiple machine-guns and various other small arms from the four-story building (A) making it near impossible to advance and take the town. The two undamaged bridges are the only ones across the river that haven't already been destroyed by retreating Germans, and only one is suitable for armour.
-All armoured units have been tied up by a German panzer unit to the west and are unable to assist. All you have at your disposal are three 105mm howitzers in a rear area behind you and two P-47's armed with two 250 lb bombs each. Both assets are immediately available but you only have time to use one before the other is diverted to support the armoured units to the west.
3. Weigh the pros and cons of both support options. Include the effects, if any, the weather will have. (paragraph or bulleted list form; whatever you're most comfortable with)
4. Based on your analysis, which one would you use?
Situation Three
Your unit is defending a town (A) situated on a road that is vital to the war effort. A German attack on your position is underway with six Panzer III's quickly approaching your defenses from two sides (B & C) threatening to cut off your escape route and any possible reinforcements. Add to that, a fierce sandstorm is brewing and heading your way, though when it will actually reach you is anyone's guess. It seems that you're forces will not be able to hold out for long without some kind of support a quick inquiry over the radio presents three options:
-An artillery battery consisting of five 105mm howitzers is available for immediate use within 5 minutes. However, reports are coming in of another, possibly larger, assault materializing to their rear. This support may not be available for long.
-A flight of five P-40 fighter-bombers were scrambled earlier today in response to a false sighting and are currently in a position to support you. They each have two 250 lb bombs under, one under each wing. Unfortunately they are low on fuel and can only engage targets for a few minutes before they have to turn back towards home. They can arrive on target in 10 minutes. If not contacted and rerouted immediately, they will not be able to support you.
-A troop of four M4 Sherman tanks is waiting in a rear area a good distance to your rear. They can arrive in 25 minutes. However, like the artillery, they may not be around long as forces may be needed for the new attack in the rear.
5. Weigh the pros and cons of both support options. Include the effects, if any, the weather will have. (paragraph or bulleted list form; whatever you're most comfortable with)
6. Based on your analysis, which one would you use?
