The small room was filled with grunts and groans, the sound of struggling fabric and an eventual sigh as Kane stepped back to look over himself in the mirror, he’d just spent the past ten minutes trying to get his formal jacket to sit straight on his slightly lopsided shoulders. He’d received his strange shoulders after being thrown from a moving truck and colliding with a post, the injury had healed quite well; he experienced no discomfort except for when he wore formal attire. Finally Kane was satisfied that he looked his best, his cheeks where as smooth as could possibly be and his rather impressive moustache had been combed up, his hair combed back and his teeth pearly white.
He took another look in the mirror and shook his head at the suit he was wearing; oh how he hated it. Augustus Kane was a man who preferred the comfort of combat fatigues, sitting in a dirty hole with good men, smoking a good cigar, and laughing about the boxing match that someone just won. A small grin grew under his furry lip; he loved boxing. Kane shook his head and turned towards the door, tonight was not about boxing, nor fighting of any other sort. He had been requested to accompany some Generals daughter to a stupid theatre show. Why me? Kane thought, he wasn’t exactly the best-looking guy in the ranks, nor the friendliest towards anyone. But an order was an order, and Kane’s limited good side would be strained tonight.
It wasn’t that he was an unkind man; its just he didn’t see the point in being friendly to everyone in sight, if someone needed a helping hand with something, Kane would assist them, he would help and then he would graciously accept whatever reward they offered for his help. Kane was a good man like that; he nodded to himself in the mirror before looking about for the most important piece of his outfit. He spotted it laying a small table near the dor and picked it up, snapped open the blade and tested the edge before clicking it shut and slipping the knife into his pocket.
He opened the door and stepped out into the cool night air, the first thing he did, as he always did whenever he stepped outside, was too look up at the sky, the stars looked back him, clear and bright, not a cloud in the air. Kane smiled, he hated performing operations in the rain, indeed that’s what he thought of this as. An operation, to escort the Generals daughter to the theatre, spend time pretending to be interested in the show, then escort her back to her doorstep. Operation Smile and Nod would soon begin.
