Oh my god, why didn't I discover this thread here earlier? This is a very interesting one.
First I have to admit that I know next to nothing about the medieval times, so I'll only name figures from WWII, although Germany of course has a long and impressive military history.
Although there are also figures like Rommel or von Manstein, in my opinion, the greatest military persons are not the Generals but the average soldiers doing outstanding things: - Erich Hartmann (the most successfull fighter pilot of all times - he shot down unbelieveable 352 enemy planes during WWII) - Michael Wittmann (the most famous, German tank ace) - Kurt Knispel (the most successfull tank ace - he destroyed 168 enemy tanks) - Hauptmann Willhelm Bach, the "Pastor in Purgatory" (commander of a 8.8 AA- battery - he hold the Halfaya pass in Africa with only a handfull of soldiers against an overwhelming British assault force)
Ulysses S. Grant - Robert E. Lee (I always hold their names together. Though they were on opposite sides, after the war they never let a bad thing be said about the other, due to the generosity of the surrender.
Thomas J. Jackson. (Stonewall) For his brilliant campaign against the federals in the fight for southern independance which cost him his life. General Jackson, I salute you.
