It was a dark, stormy night. Rain pored down from the massive, gray clouds which covered the sky. Adding to the darkness was the fact that, even if the sky hadn't been concealed by the clouds, there was no moon. It wasn't a flooding, damaging rain, but it was still heavy. Below this storm was an army base which bustled with solders going about their duties, and others who were just trying to get out of the rain.
Amid the center of the various buildings that made up the small army base was a large building which at the moment had several groups of solders rushing in from the rain. The dreary lights that hung above head in here illuminated the busy scene of solders coming in to get their dinner. Their were several long tables setup around the large room.
Captain Carson Peterson sat quietly at one of these tables eating his dinner. The tables weren't very fool yet as he had come early. Carson sat quietly reading a book as he ate. It was a book on gun design which he read to keep himself familiarized with the various weapons that he might come in contact with during duty. He read for a few minutes, pausing occasionally to scoop up some pees or potatoes to eat. The food here wasn't great, but it was better than the rations he got out in the field.
The soft drumming of the rain hitting the roof of the building was very soothing and pleasing to Carson's ear. It made it easier to focus on his reading and harder to be distracted. To tell the truth Carson hadn't been awake for more than an hour, sense his shift had him up late, so this was really more of his breakfast than his dinner. On the back of his chair his helmet hung idly as its owner ate and read. His uniform was actually rather dry as, unlike many of the other solders coming in, Carson had had the common sense to wear a poncho which also hanged limp over the back of his seat.
