OOC: I'd appreciate it if you marked your position on this map. Or if you can't do that, then just ell me where you are. 1st building from right at the top, second building from left at the top, etc.
His feet slipped on a pile of rubble as he skittered along the side of the road, holding the handle of his submachine gun tightly in his right hand. Daniel paused in front of a doorway; the door laid a few metres away, half buried in the snow of the road. The road hadn’t been traversed by any large vehicle in weeks. But, a person could have been walking there just a few hours ago and there footsteps could already have been buried by the frequent showers of snow. Satisfied that he hadn’t heard anything, he continued on down the ruined street. Most of the windows of the surrounding buildings were gone. If he looked down the street, then he wouldn’t see one piece of glass to reflect off the mid-day sun. The whole city was like this; silent and dead. There had been a large battle just a few days ago, with many casualties. In the end both sides had pulled out of the city and the only people left behind were the wounded and the abandoned.
Daniel moved along the edge of the road, under the shadow of the buildings, where there wasn’t as much snow to leave footprints. There were still quite sizeable squads of Germans left behind. Just yesterday he had just entered a building off the street, when a seven-man patrol marched quickly and silently passed. Since then he had been much more careful and he sometimes travelled entirely through buildings on the side of the street. Most of them had enough holes in them so you could traverse from one to the other while hidden from the street below.
Daniel suddenly turned into a large, four floor apartment. The walls used to be covered with decorated pink wallpaper, but it was now filthy from many months of neglect. He leaned against the far wall, with his weapon pointed out the doorway and held his breath. He released it after a few seconds and looked around the room. It was a large room; not the main hallway for the apartment, but maybe a room where the posh Germans would sit and relax. Empty doorframes led to other rooms of the building, each as dilapidated as the one he was in. He pushed open one of the only doors still on its hinges and was greeted by a stairs leading up to the other levels. He climbed up this, trying not to make the rotten timber creak. He stepped out onto the second floor. He would have gone higher, but the stairs had been blown apart by some sort of bomb. He walked through the floor, to check that there was nobody here and was surprised that there didn’t appear to be any other ways up. It was a safe haven for now.
He stepped over to the window and scanned the street. He knew that there were loads of Germans still in the city and some of them had to be near here. He kept his Grease gun trained out at the street below and the buildings. This would have been a snipers playground. There were so many windows to choose from and so many different angles at the streets below. But, if he stayed aware then he would not be an easy target for a sniper. He continued to scan the area.
