The Accident

It was a late, cold, cloudy afternoon and Daniel was working on paperwork in the barracks for Herr Sturmbannführer Wolfram. The paperwork was about two of the recruits getting into a fist fight during lunch and one of the recruits sent the other to the medical center. The recruit that was still standing was detained and Daniel was working on the paperwork to kick the last one standing out and keep the hospitalized one in. He was so preoccupied on the paperwork and thinking about how this probably won’t pass, he didn’t even notice what time it was until he looked up at the clock and said to himself in a calm voice "1:30”He looked back down at the papers and started working again. He started thinking about what time is it really and looked at his watch and saw what time it really was and said out loud "2:30 VERSPÄTE ICH MICH!!!" As he was rushing, he was putting all of his paperwork together in a neat pile in his briefcase and as he was doing that he was thinking about what Herr Sturmbannführer Wolfram told him about being late to teach his class again and it started running over and over”Wenn Ihr spätes wieder seine Ihre Reihe!”. As he was heading out the door he grabs his coat, hat and briefcase he was thinking to himself "Hut, Mantel, Aktentasche Was noch werde ich vermisst?" Then before he goes out the door he notices his rifle and said "Das ist das, was ich, mein Gewehr vermisst wurde." Then he goes over and pickes up his rifle from next to the desk. He asks himself the same question but remembered that he had his rifle "Hut, Mantel, Aktentasche, Gewehr das sollte es tun."He turns around and heads out the door and heads towards the Rifle Range. He was running towards the Rifle Range when he noticed Strumfelder and his medic team training in the open field. They were training on some kind of scenerio. Last he heard they problems with a stretcher and Strumfelder decided to talk to Herr Sturmbannführer Wolfram. Daniel guessed that they got the new stretchers. He didn't have time to talk so he just waved as he ran by.

Erhard nodded to the flustered Sergeant as he sprinted past. A rather nice man, if not a little scatterbrained. He had a large lump of paper under his arm; Erhard guessed it was the paperwork for which he had spent all his morning working on. Oh well, he’d rather be fixing a broken nose than being shot at. His assistants bussed around him, while two conventional soldiers which had been assigned to him, both looking thoroughly bored, played with the stretcher. This was more teaching than anything else. Erhard had ‘borrowed’ one off duty man, given him a story, and set his men to work on him. He was to review what they were doing, but it was cold and overcast, and nobody wanted to be outside for too long. He might take a couple of the men out for a drink later, Erhard thought.

Even Erhard was bored, but he had another ninety minutes of this hell a head of him. Maybe the Americans in a fit of idiocy would launch a daylight, low level bombing raid, and liven the day up. Or maybe a paradrop. Anything to liven this day up. Strumfelder rapped his coat around himself ever tighter, around himself, then dived into one of his jacket pockets. He removed a thick crimson scarf and tucked it into his collar. The wind was picking up, and would find its ways into any exposed areas.

Erhard wondered if there was anyway to make time run faster...

As Daniel was running the Rifle Range came into site and he started to slow down as he came closer to the range. As he was getting closer he looked at the range which is outdoors while the classroom is indoors. He came to a stop when he got to the building for the classroom and could hear one of the recruits talking and asking “Wo ist Unterscharführer BartelsMeire? Kommt er?” As he was about to walk in, he heard another recruit said “Unterscharführer BartelsMeire-Gewohnheit, hier sein, wird er von Schreibarbeiten so völlig in Anspruch genommen, und plus änderte ich die Uhr, so dass es eine Stunde hinten war, überprüft er immer die Uhr und nicht seine Bewachung. So beunruhigen Sie nicht, dass es ein Freier Tag ist.” As Daniel was listening to this he was getting upset but then he decided to calm down and just teach his class. So he turns the knob of the door and enters the classroom. The soldier that had changed the clock looked surprised to see him there. Daniel told the class to sit down so they can start on their lesson. “Heute Klasse sind wir dabei, zu lernen, wie man auseinandernimmt, zu reinigen und zurück wieder eine Pistole zusammenzustellen.” he paused for a second and continued ”Wenn Sie einen guten Job tun, und wenn es Zeit gibt, werden wir zur Reihe ausgehen und einige Ziele schießen.” As he standing there at the desk he then shows them how to take apart a gun then he says “Ganz richtig zeigte ich Ihnen, wie man die Pistole jetzt ich was Sie auseinandernahm, um dasselbe zu machen. Dann bin ich dabei, Ihnen zu zeigen, wie man es sobald Ihr getan reinigt.”

He then watched the others take apart their guns and when he noticed all of them were done he showed them how to clean the gun and he told them to do the same. As they were doing that he walked around observing, he stopped a few times to yell at one of the soldier for doing the wrong steps. When he noticed all the recruits were done he showed them how to put the gun back together and he told them to do the same. As he stood there and watched, he had an idea. When noticed that they were finished, he starts to them while he grabs his stopwatch “Bevor wir zur Reihe gehen, die ich das will, nehmen Sie auseinander und stellen zurück zusammen. Ich, gehen im Moment zur Zeit Sie, wenn Sie beenden, kommen weniger als 5 Minuten Sie, um zur Reihe auszugehen. Machen Sie sich bereit, Werden Sie Gesetzt, Gehen!” Then he starts the clock and watches the others take apart their guns and put their guns back together the first one was done in 1 minute and 30 seconds. He signals to go ahead then the next 1 minute 54 seconds. And so on and so forth when the final guy was done in 4 minutes and 54 seconds. He signaled him to go. He also heads out to the range and tells them to grab a gun. As their grabbing guns one of the guns discharges and shoots a recruit in the leg. The recruit falls to the ground and starts screaming. Daniel runs over to the fallen recruit and looks him over. He tells one of the recruits to go get Strumfelder and his medic team. He watches the recruit leave.

A rifle firing was not an odd event in the military. A rifle firing followed by a scream was still pretty orthodox. But a rifle firing followed by a scream on a base several hundred miles from the nearest enemy was. Strumfelder turned to look for the source, towards where the Sergeant had been teaching. Several of his numbed men did suit. It didn’t stimulate Erhard’s mind trying to formulate a picture of the situation. But a soldier running frantically towards him confirmed it. He reached down to the floor and slipped his medical bag over his shoulder. At least he would get to do some real medical work now. “Pfaff, Sprint zur medizinischen Mitte und beanspruchen einen Krankenwagen. Der Rest von Ihnen mit mir. Holen Sie die Bahre, wir kann sie benötigen.” Erhard talked briskly. If a man had been shot, he would either be dead already, or would have a while. That was the way of war. Strumfelder turned to the now bandaged soldier lying on the ground, and looked down at his watch. “Ich sehe Sie an… 20:00 im Tarven.” Erhard grinned.

Erhard sped his pace up to a small jog, his five assistants behind him. The Schütze came running up, very out of breath. “Ich sehe bereits zu, mich sorge nicht.” Strumfelder spoke before the man could even draw breath, and continued on. As the small group reached the range, Erhard could see the man on the ground, a few men crouched round him comforting him, while the remaining stood around watching. “Kann jeder slighlty zurückschieben; Ich werde etwas Raum benötigen sich zu bewegen.” He knelt down and looked the man over. One close friend remained over the man, at his head. It took Erhard a moment to find the wound, even thought he man seemed to be in great pain. The bullet hole was small, and was located on the inside of the soldier’s jackboot.

“Was ist Ihr Name?” Erhard questioned as he probed around the ankle, trying to distract the young soldier. “Treffan... Hoch, Herr Doktor. Ich bin... Schütze... Treffan Hoch.” The man was in quite some pain. Erhard wasn’t technically a Doktor, more of a nurse, but he knew what he was doing, and telling Hoch would do nothing but unnerve him further. The wound didn’t look too serious. Maybe a broken ankle, and an operation to remove the bullet. The only thing that surprised Erhard was the lack of exit hole. He’d take a closer look

He unslung his leather medical bag hanging over his shoulder and removed a scalpel. Hoch’s eyes bulged at the blade. “Entspannen Sie sich. Ich muss Ihre Aufladung entfernen. Es ist am einfachsten, wenn ich es abschnitt.” The private did relax, but his eyes didn’t move off the blade. Erhard placed it just below the ankle bone, and slowly cut around. It was better to use this over a large knife, where he would have to have tugged the leg around. He did a full circle around the leg, and slowly removed what could appear to be a leather slipper. Hoch was left with what looked like a shin pad on his lower foot. Blood then suddenly soaked into the Private’s woollen sock. That wasn’t a good sign, and meant there was more than a broken ankle.

Erhard placed both his hands onto the tight leather cylinder, and tried to gently slip it off. “Scheizer!” Hoch roared. Strumfelder immediately released his grip. The calf seemed to have swelled up, something he hadn’t expected. He reached into his bag before continuing, and removed a tin case and a small phial containing 8mg of Morphine. Erhard opened the tin, selected a syringe and screwed on a needle. He snapped the end off the small glass phial and used the syringe to remove the contents. Carefully he turned the glass tube upside down and squirted a small amount of the liquid out, removing any air. “Sind Sie, Hoch links- oder rechtshändig?” Erhard questioned, while looking at his watch. 15:45. Next does at 19:45. “Recht,” came a reply. Erhard looked at Hoch’s friend. “Rollen Sie oben sein linkes sleve bitte, bis zu der Schulter, also wird der Muskel herausgestellt. Was ist Ihr Name?” Erhard said. It was nice to be personal around whom you were working. “Adolph Hoch, Herr Doktor.” The man replied, doing as he was ordered. “Werden Sie bezogen? Entspannen Sie sich Ihren Arm bitte.” The Medic placed the needle straight into Treffan’s shoulder muscle, and dispensed the liquid.

“Ja sind wir Brüder. Zwillinge.” Erhard glanced at both their faces and could see a close resemblance. Though that did little to make his job any easier. He quickly unscrewed the bloodied needle, and placed the two parts into a divided part of the tin, where he stored his ‘to-be’ sterilized needles. Erhard shut it tightly and tucked it back into the bag, and withdrew a pair of surgical gloves. “Das erleichtert die Schmerz.” He slipped them over his hands and took up the scalpel again. It was impossible to merely slip the remaining boot off, so he slowly cut a long line from the top of the leather to the bottom. Erhard bent the cylinder open and swore. Now it all made sense.

Being shot in the ankle can be far more dangerous than people think. The bullet had ricocheted off the ankle, and had ridden upwards. It had punched straight into the tibia, fracturing it, and sending bone splinters through the flesh. Then it had exited and churned up muscle as its shape warped. It was a stomach churning sight.

Strumfelder reviewed the situation. The bone was very badly damaged, and there was no way to strap it up. If he left it, Treffan could quite easily develop Gangrene from infection, and even die here from blood loss. And now without the restriction of the boot, the blood could flow freely. There was only one option, and that was amputation. The effected area had been contained below the knee. If Erhard could keep it, Treffan would still be able to walk if he had a wooden leg attached. He looked up at the now petrified Private. Telling someone they were going to lose a limb was always harder than announcing a death. Erhard gulped, and looked straight at the poor man. “Ich werde es entfernen müssen.” Treffan jaw dropped and his breathing sped up. Erhard cast a look at Adolf, and the brother knew what he had been asked to do. He tried to relax his brother, and keep him talking. Though that would be hard in a minute.

Erhard removed a small block of smooth wood from the bag. It was clean, but the teeth marks of previous users wasn’t comforting. The Medic placed it into the patient’s mouth. He didn’t want the man to loose his tongue as well. “Ich bilde dieses so schnell, wie möglich. Er hilft den Schmerz wenn Sie don' t-Blick und das Morphium sollten dull ihn. Gerade Fokus auf Ihrem Bruder. In einigen Minuten you' ll ist in der Wiederherstellung der medizinischen Mitte.” The poor boy looked away, and Erhard reached into his bag, and became very aware that there were over twenty pairs of eyes focused on him. He’d only amputated once before, and that was with two fully trained Doctors by his side. He’d never done it by himself before, and this was in the middle of a field. If he got this wrong, a man would die very painfully.

Once again he delved into his bag, and removed a curved knife, more of a sickle, sheathed in a leather scabbard, and a small hack saw. The flesh directly below the knee had hardly been touched and would be the easiest place to make the cut. He lifted out several rolls of bandage, and... No tourniquet. Bollocks! Erhard looked around for something that would serve the same purpose. He unhitched his belt, and quickly tightened it around Treffan’s thigh. It would cut down on the inevitable blood loss. Next, he readied the knife, and placed it under the leg. In one swift action, he brought the blade around, stripping away half the flesh. Treffan screamed and bit into the wood. Erhard moved swiftly to remove the last amount. The bone was exposed, but it rapidly became red and blood pored over it. Dropping the knife and setting up the saw, Strumfelder pushed it back and forth, while gripping onto the lower leg. After twenty seconds he finally punched through it, to the relief of his biceps.

But it wasn’t over yet. The femoral artery was spraying out like a garden hose, and was about the size of a large finger. Erhard grabbed the end, and tied a tight knot in it to restrict the blood flow. “Verbände!” Erhard called sharply, and two of his medics jumped down and started coiling the beige material around the stub. Within a two minutes, the leg was completely mummified and the blood flow slowed. Treffan was worn out and tired, but the worst was over, and Strumfelder could here the ambulance bound over the rough ground. He looked down at himself. He had no belt, his lower torso was soaked in blood, and so were his lower arms and gloves. Well, he’d wanted excitement, and he guessed he’d got it.

Daniel watched as Strumfelder finished up the amputation. As Daniel stood there he thought to himself How did the gun discharge by itself? He couldn’t have. He wouldn’t. Would he?[/b] As Daniel was coming back to reality the ambulance was already here and Daniel watched the ambulance crew put Schütze Hoch inside the ambulance. From the ambulance he hears his name “Unterscharführer BartelsMeire!!” So he steps inside the ambulance and leans over the Private and the Private said “Sie sind der beste Lehrer gewesen, den ich jemals hatte. Es gibt ein Ding ich muss Ihnen sagen, dass Albert Krons die Uhr in den Baracken änderte, und er war dabei, Sie in Schwierigkeiten dafür zu bekommen.” As Daniel nodded and said “Ich weiß, er tat, und Sie waren mein bestes, Privat.” As Daniel straightened up and walked off of the ambulance and headed towards the rifle range and started looking for the rifle that Hoch was using. As he was looking at all the rifles and inspecting them he took a rifle pointed it down range and shot it. He did the same with the others until he came across something a bit strange. All the rifles, but one, were fine and the one that wasn’t as soon as he picked it up it discharged and shot a hole in the roof. As any good soldier he put it on safety but the strange thing was the safety was on. As he looked at the safety with the barrel pointing down range, it took him about 10 minutes to realize someone tampered with the gun and the safety is now the fire-ready stage. As he thought he had a hypothesis What if the fire-ready stage is now the safety stage so he switched it to fire-ready stage and pulled the trigger…. *BANG* Well that hypothesis went done the drain he thought. He looked at the gun for while until he looked at his watch and said”6:30” it was supper time and he wasn’t hungry he was too worked up about this gun until someone walk into his light ”He Ihr in meinem Licht.” they still didn't move and he looks up and relizes who it is and says ”Schade, Strumfelder wusste ich nicht, dass es Sie war. Ich werde gerade über diese Pistole so verarbeitet.”

Strumfelder had seen Hoch back to the Medical centre and found him a nice cosy bed, and some good medics. Than would live, but he would never quite recover. But that was the price of war, and you have to expect to pay it when you join up, simple as. He’d made his way back to his quarters and got changed, before tossing the clothes into the laundry for cleaning. He’d also showered and took his wallet with him. He was going into the town. Today had been a bit of an event, to say the least, but having a free day tomorrow meant he could enjoy himself at the tavern more than usual.

He wandered out of the medical quarters and headed towards the north exit. It was a ten minute walk form the base, down a hill to the small town. He passed the main training yard, then further on the range, where today festivities had been held. It was six thirty now, three hours since the cut. Erhard turned and observed the range, and noticed the slightest movement. Afternoon duties had ended over an hour ago. Erhard turned and walked quietly over. As he neared, the man called out his name. Were his footsteps really that distinctive?

It was BartelsMeire. What the bloody hell was he doing out so late? Erhard sighed and looked down at the man. “Sie benötigen etwas starker Abstieg Ihre Kehle. Vergessen Sie die Waffen; verriegeln Sie sie oben und markieren Sie das zweifelhafte. Haben Sie einen Ingenieurblick an ihm morgen. It' s nicht Ihr responsibilitty. Aber ich tue surgest Sie gehe Hoch morgen zwar sehen. Sein Bruder kann ihn nicht halten indefinatly besetzt.”

~ You need something strong down your throat. Forget the weapons; lock them up and mark the dodgy one. Have an engineer look at it tomorrow. It's not your responsibilitty. But I do surgest you go and see Hoch tommorow though. His brother cannot keep him occupied indefinatly.

As Daniel looked at Strumfelder and said ”Sie haben recht. Ich sollte die Gewehre in diesem Augenblick weglegen und etwas veranlassen zu essen. Auch ich werde gehen sehen, dass Hoch Morgen wie Sie sagte.” Daniel got up with the rifle and went into the shed, where the ammo and other weapons are kept, to look for a marker to mark the gun. As he was looking he found a cork and put it in the muzzle and said “Das wird tun müssen.” As he was coming out of the shed he remembered that he had to return some paperwork to Herr Sturmbannführer Wolfram. He went inside the classroom to get his briefcase. As he was coming out of the classroom with his briefcase that is when he noticed that Strumfelder was all dressed up so he decided to ask ”Ich bemerkte gerade, dass Sie Sie so fein angezogen werden ausgehend?”

The Medic smiled at the man. “Wie ich sagte, benötigen Sie etwas starker Abstieg Ihre Kehle. Ich bin weg in Stadt, ich kaufe Sie ein Getränk, wenn Sie ein wünschen. But nobody died, and Erhard found he had made quite a name for himself as well. “Angegangen, lässt zur Stadt innen kommen.
