It had been a long and hard week, actually it had been a long hard year to be more accurate. There was never just a solid day of just relaxation, and finally that day had come. Edzard actually had time to hang up his gillie, polish his other pair of boots that he used for special occasions, they had just been gathering dust while he had been in France. The boots he normally wore were just about to fall apart what with all the crawling and sneaking he had been doing. He had planned on getting a new pair before the day was out.
He peeled his shirt off and then his socks, making a rather disgusting face as the order drifted about. He pried open a window to let the air in, and after a small stutter step, he just threw the socks right on out as well. If it rains, I'll be happy. he thought with a smirk of enthusiasm.
He plopped down on his bunk and stretched his arms and shoulders out a bit, pulled out a whet stone and set about turning his new blade into a razor sharp piece of fine steel. He had yet to have to use it, but that was because he had the sneaking part down so well, or the Allies had the finding part all screwed up. He paused for a second and looked out into the hallway, for once all was quiet, you could hear the light bit of shuffling down the hall, but that was mainly from the rest of the men doing something similar as well, no one talked, not much anyway, no one was packing, everyone knew the feeling and didn't want to ruin it, but no one could explain it anyway. It was just...earned, and everyone was sure of that.
