Rhodri was standing in the rain. Looking at the graves of friends who he'd lost since enlisting with the army. He was expecting more people to join him soon and was waiting patiently for them.
He had brought some flowers to put on their Graves and was now sitting on a nearby park bench looking at the three graves in front of him.
The first said:-
R.I.P.
Private Llywelyn Glyndwr Died May 29th, France while serving his country. Gwell angau na chywilydd. We eill never forget you.
The next one was two Graves to the right of it. It said:-
R.I.P. Private Ethan Clements Died June 2nd, Italy while serving his country. Gwell angau na Chywilydd. You will always be in our thoughts.
Then the next was directly next to the second. It read:-
R.I.P. Private Defrel Cadarn Died June 26th, Africa while serving his country. Gwell angau na Chywilydd. See you soon son.
Rhodri grinned slightly at the last bit and felt a bit better. Obviously his family wanted to cheer themselves up a bit so they had put a slighty comical caption on the Grave.
Tom walked into the graveyard silently with his two year old son as he approeched the young coproral he said
"Shame they where all good men"
"Good to see you again Rhodri" he said casuily.
"Evar since the fusiliers disbaned i havn't been able to contact you i like you to meat someone"
He pulled his son James in front of him. James was still young but he had develped some of Toms long blond hair.
"This i my son James Edwards" he said proudly.
"I want him to see how real men live and die i have something to tell you if i ....d...die i wabt you to take care of him be his gardion will you take the responsiblity?" he said nervously.
"Im off to the front tomorow i want to know that if i die i left my son in safe hand please?" he said nervously
Rhodri was woken from the trance of thought by a voice. He turned and looked to see Private Tom Edwards and some small child holding his hand like a vice. Rhodri half-listened to what Tom had to say but when he said the word die he began to listen more carefully. Tom continued and Rhodri was surprised at the last thing Tom said. He had asked him to take care of his son.
Rhodri was rather surprised that Tom trusted him that much. Rhodri hadn't particularly liked Tom but he didn't hate him that much. He knew that Rhys and David his Cousins might not be too happy if he agreed.
Saying no would be like killing him but saying yes may spoil his chances of having a child of his own which he was hoping to do once he found a wife. If he ever did. But then again some women would not mind having an extra child. It would also let him see how they treat children and if they like them or not.
'Um...Yeah...sure.' Rhodri said after much pondering. He3 decided to wait for Tom's response.
Rhodri watched Tom walk over to Defrel's Grave. Defrel had been one of Tom's closest friends. James was now standing by Rhodri and was looking up at him. James finished staring at Rhodri and moved ont o his father who was nearly in tears.
Rhodri walked over to James and knelt down, bringing his eyes to James' eyes.
'Hello there! Are you OK?' Rhodri asked.
James gave a nod and walked over to the bench and somehow managed to get half on. Rhodri helped him the rest of the way and then sat down beside him.
Rhodri sat there next to the two year old who had announced his need to leave a few minuted earlier. He sat there quietly watching the various movements and trying to rread the inscriptions of some of the Graves.
Tom finally stood up and turned to Rhodri.
'Fancy a lift?' Tom asked inclining his head to a nearby car.
'Yeah sure,' Rhodri answered they began to walk towards the car. Rhodri opened the door at the front and sat down. He then pulled the door shut and sat there waiting to get back to the barracks. He was disappointed with the rest of the Fusiliers. They had not come to pay their respects to the ir dead friends.
