The woman gave a laugh and straightened up, ”She says she doesn’t know and that are you mad.” she said, Stephen glanced down, kneeling once again, shaking his head. ”No.” he said shortly to her, smiling again, his eyes looking her over. ”Please tell her that may she please come with me.” he said to the woman who nodded and began to speak again to Adelheid.
” Nicht ist er nicht wütend, sagte er kann Sie kommt bitte mit ihm” she looked over at Stephen who had stretched out his hand once more, wanting her to except it. The poor girl had started to cry, he didn’t like her to cry so much like that, it made him feel sad and upset. ”Bitte.” he said, his eyes now much calmer and kinder than they had been. He wanted this girl to be safe, she needed to be safe.
His hand then went to his side as he waited to see what she said.

For a moment, Adelheid stopped crying, but still sniffled a little. She looked at the woman and Herr Stephen, who were both waiting for her answer. Herr Stephen's eyes had softened, and he definitely looked like a male version of Sister Kiel, extending his hand towards Adelheid. The child looked at it, then back at him, hesitating.
"Bitte," said he, his hand going to his side. Adelheid looked him in the eye for a moment, and gave a great sniff, wiping her face with her sleeve for the second or third time since she had met him. Shakily, she sighed, and walked over to him.
"Ja Herr Stephen, komme ich," said the girl, said the daughter of the "Rhys" man that Herr Stephen seemed to recognize. He said her father was a soldier...she hoped "Rhys" wasn't a Nazi, she really did. If this man knew her...Vater...then maybe he was bringing her to meet "Rhys".
The woman smiled, ”She is coming with you.” she said, turning to Stephen who had by now, stood up and was surveying the girl. ”Good.” Stephen said, shaking the woman’s hand. ”Thank you for your help.” he took from his pocket, some money and handed the coins to the woman who smiled and walked away with her basket.
Stephen now turned to Adelheid who was still standing there. He stretched out his hand for her to take, smiling, ”Come on Adelheid.” he said, awaiting an answer. God this was going to be hard, he would take her back to HQ, get her some new clothes and some food and then get another person to help in telling her about her father. He didn’t know how he would break the news to the young one, if she hadn’t been the daughter of one of his greatest friends then he would have left her, but she had obviously lost Rhys, or Rhys had left her alone and Stephen thought it was best to tell her that her father was dead then her to keep on looking for a dead man.
He started to walk down the street, turned and stopped, waiting for her to follow…or to not follow him.

For last one moment, Adelheid hesitated, looking thoughtfully at the outstretched hand of Herr Stephen. She closed her ink-coloured eyes, murmuring a small prayer in German with her hand over her heart, and then gently took the soldier's hand. Easily falling in step with the man, she said nothing as the pair walked down the street, Adelheid's thoughts whirring with all that she had been told.
So her father was a soldier, and since Nazis and...the not-Nazis...didn't get along, then the "Rhys" man had probably been a...not-Nazi. Herr Stephen also seemed nicer then the other soldiers, so he probably wouldn't do anything bad to her. Besides, he'd given her something to eat, and everyone she had met beforehand had only pitied her and patted her on the head, or tossed her a few Reichsmarks to use. She'd never been treated like this before, not since the orphanage...
And so, the two walked away from the street, the milk bucket still lying where it had fallen, its contents now soaked into the ground. It would be no longer needed, though; the small bit of nourishment Adelheid had eaten was enough. It was a little heavy in her stomach, but she felt fine, and she was grateful to have some energy back to burn.
