Wilhelm Von Schlegal would be departing from his apartment in Munich where he and his brother, Erwin, and sister, Eva, lived together. The mood in the apartment was rather quiet. Wilhelm was in his room which he shared his brother, packing his belongings in the bag that he was given to by the Wehrmacht. He especially liked his Kar98, which he was hoping to improve at future training. Continuing to pack, his younger brother Erwin, with his hair combed and shirt buttoned, just continued staring at his older brother.
"Why must he do this?" thought Erwin to himself."He even told me he would not abandon us, and now he lies?"Erwin began shedding tears but looked away from his brother, just staring at the portrait of their late father and mother on their wedding day. The father was in his German army uniform from the Great War while his mom was in her white dress.
Eva walked into the boy's room with a tray of coffee. She had on a black dress and her black make up could be seen, dripping from her eyes. This showed signs that she was crying. Eva placed the tray on the table in between the two beds, then backed away to the rocking chair by the window.
Wilhelm buttoned his shirt and placed his rank of "Unteroffizier" on his shirt. He was proud to serve his country, to wear this uniform, to have a gun. Wilhelm could tell the stress that was shown in his siblings faces. He sat down next to his brother and put his arm around him.
"Erwin, remember that story that father told us?" he asked in a soft voice. Erwin looked at his brother for a brief second, then looked at the floor, shaking his head."Well, you were fairly young, but he used to say it to us every night before bed. It was about him in the trenches in the early days of the Great War. Every day, his company was constantly bombarded by artillery fire. He would be huddled around his men, praying to God that they would make it out alive. For the past 5 days, the artillery intensified and you know what? Not one of he and his men were hit. Do you have any idea why?"the brother shook his head, waiting for Wilhelm to continue."It was because they had the good Lord on their side. A guardian angel watched over them. Father knew that we were always thinking about him and that helped him stay alive."
"I don't understand, brother." asked Ewrin, confused.
"Point is, Erwin," Wilhelm stroking his brother's head,"there will always be someone watching over me. I will always be in your heart, same goes with Eva. Mother and Father will be watching over us all the time."
Erwin couldn't hold it in anymore as he started crying heavily. Wilhelm grasped his brother and held back his tears, trying to stay strong."Don't worry, everything is gonna be alright. Eva, come here."Waved Wilhelm to his sister.
Eva got up from her seat and sat down next to Erwin, and began rubbing his back."Mother and father wanted me to give these to you guys when they were ready."Wilhelm reached into his back pocket and held out a locket. He handed it over to Erwin who opened it. Inside the locket were two pictures. One picture was of their father in his Infantry Uniform while the other was of his mother holding the two babies.
As Erwin passed the locket to his sister, Wilhelm took out a book that was made out of leather. On the front, it said "Von Schlegal Familie Geschichte". The book contained all of the history updated from the past Schlegals and kept up with the current. Wilhelm took this as a sacred book for his siblings to understand their family history. It was now 6:45 AM, and Wilhelm went back to packing as his siblings looked through the book.
