The quiet ticking of a clock and the occasional rustle of papers were the only sounds heard from Otto Wolff's study as the dark-haired man concentrated on his work. Cold winds were sweeping across the streets of Berlin and most people preferred to stay inside their homes this particular Saturday afternoon. The shelter of the courtyard prevented the wind's full force from hitting the house, but on the side that opened up towards the street, the windows rattled occasionally with the chilling gusts of wind. Still, inside the apartment it was still quite warm thanks to the expensive heating system, although the wooden floors had a tendency of getting somewhat chilly when the temperature outside dropped very sharply.
The Kriminalkommissar was completely engrossed in his work, paying close attention to every smallest detail. The most confidential papers were always left behind at his office where they would certainly be secure. He only brought the more everyday work back home and he still insisted in locking up his work papers inside a safe that had been installed in his study. It was highly secure and had also cost him a pretty penny, but over the time Otto had grown somewhat paranoid of just about anything. He had been working in the Geheime Staatspolizei for so long that it felt like he was seeing conspiracies and traitors in every shadowy corner these days.
Otto's office held part of his book collection in an old oaken bookshelf and original paintings representing German landscapes decorated the walls. The two windows of the office gave out to the courtyard, but usually Otto kept a set of heavy red drapes pulled over them. A comfortable leather chair was reserved for Otto behind his heavy desk, there was also a much simpler wooden chair in front of it. It wasn't as if people would actually visit him in his home office, but having a chair for the occasional visitor had seemed like a proper idea to Otto. Next to the bookcase there was a more comfortable reading chair with red velvet lining, just in case Otto felt like reading a book in the comfort of his own study.
He had arrived home a few hours ago and relieved Elise of her duty of watching over Heidi. Making sure that the girl had eaten properly and finally received new sets of clothing, Otto had quickly retreated into his study. He had left the door of his study open, just in case Heidi would come up with some silly mischief. He was sure that the girl would be happy with the books in the living room, however, Otto had told the child that she could make use of the home library if she made sure to treat the books gently. Many of them were quite valuable and it was good that Heidi would learn how to treat other people's property with respect, anyway.
The desk was riddled with several papers and a few files of people Otto would be questioning the next week. He believed in doing good amount of groundwork before setting up to any task. Nothing unnerved the detainees more than the vast amount of knowledge you seemed to have on them. Other than the papers, there were not any personal things on the desk, only a black phone and a glass of water. His pistol and the warrant disc of the Gestapo he had hidden inside one of the drawers of the desk earlier.
Wearing a dark suit and his small, metal-framed reading glasses, Otto leaned in to scribble up his signature on a series of papers decorated with the swastika-carrying eagle of the Reich. Going through paper after another, Otto actually relished having something meaningful to do instead of just loitering around, it made him feel accomplished. He was feeling quite content also because the dreaded headaches had not made themselves known today.
That if anything was a reason to feel somewhat happy and Otto allowed himself to hum a brief and low tune of some song stuck in his head as he picked up another paper from the desk.
