Maddie walked down the hall of the hospital dressed in her uniform. On top of her head was the white nurses' cap with a red cross on it. Her bag was hanging over her shoulder and gently thumping against her thigh. She checked in on her patients. Some were soldiers, while others were civilians injured in bombings and gun fights.
She gently checked on a young man who had gotten shot in the chest with a gun. His wounds were superficial, so he would more than likely survive. She smiled at him and gently changed his bandage.
"You're looking better and better" Maddie said to him warmly as she taped down the fresh gauze pad over the bullet entrance.
Her dark hair was pulled into a ponytail. Some shorter strands had hung down against her cheeks. She quickly brushed them aside and gently patted the young man's arm.
She left the room and began making her rounds down the hall. Babies were crying and there was chatter all over the place. Maddie could tell that some were worried families of soldiders and the civilians. She hated this. She hated seeing people hurt and in pain. It was partially why she had become a nurse in the first place to help aide those that needed help medically. Being out on the field, it was more dangerous and unforgiving. Being in the hospital itself, was just as bad being confined in the building with sick and possibly dying people. She wouldn't be human if she didn't have feelings and sometimes this job got to her.
She would never quit of course but still, it bothered her to see so many less fortunate than her. She stopped at the nurses station to check in with the head nurse, wondering if she would be assigned a new patient
