Started it off with a bang; please don’t count the death of Private Worth as a kill.
The six men trooped along the side of the dirt road, each footstep kicking up a small cloud of dust. Birdsong sounded from the thinly spread trees around them and the men were in happy mood, even though they were a scouting party and way ahead of the main column of advance. Although in a generally happy mood the probability of there being a few surprises left behind by the Germans was high, so each step they made was met with caution. Fortunately, a lot of the mines left behind by the Germans were Teller mines and the like which allowed footmen to pass over them, but destroyed the vehicles that came along behind them.
”There’s a few buildings ahead, Sergeant,” said Private Wilson quietly. ”Stop.” Daniel muttered and crouched down onto his haunches. The men around him did the same thing. Daniel pulled a pair of binoculars from around his neck and peered awkwardly into them. ”Just a few wooden cabins,” Daniel said. ”They don’t look like they are inhabited; no smoke from chimneys or anything. One bigger building farther up the road... No sign of any Germans there; a lot of the windows are cracked and broken, roof is falling apart.” He lifted the binoculars from around his neck and tossed them to Private Worth, absent minded. ”Worth, take point 20 yards in front and everyone else in single file” He ordered. The squad got into position and started moving forward.
They reached a spot where the cabins were easily visible along the road and there they stopped involuntarily. Cracks from weapons discharging sounded from ahead of them and Daniel swore as he saw movement around the larger cabin. Private Worth jerked grotesquely as bullets ripped through his body and he fell to the ground a bloody mess. The rest of the squad scattered as they heard the shots; Privates Wilson and Jones going to the left and Private Teal, Corporal Smyth and Daniel diving to the right hand side of the road.
They flattened themselves against ground or behind tree’s to guard from more German volleys. Corporal Smyth fired off a couple of retaliatory shots from behind his tree, but knew they would be ineffective. The Germans must have evidently lost their targets in the shin high foliage alongside the road as they didn’t fire off anymore rounds. Daniel lifted himself up onto his knees and called out loudly; ”Everyone OK?” The affirmative came back from 4 members of the squad. Daniel looked around at the situation. While coming there, the scouts had been happy about how thinly spread the trees were as it meant no Germans could sneak up on them, but now it meant the Germans in the cabin had easy shots unless the Americans used their cover wildly. Daniel raised his arm and signalled to Wilson and Jones to flank the Germans on their side. A nod came back and Daniel spoke to those nearer him. ”Smyth, stay back here. I want you to keep up fire on the Germans in the building. I and Teal will go along this right flank so you’ll need to keep the attention on yourself. Smyth nodded and turned away from Daniel. The Staff Sergeant turned to Teal; ”Wait until Smyth starts firing before we move”
