The five other men in the half-track all stared at Albert with hidden distaste. Albert looked down, pretending to be preoccupied with the French scenery rushing by. He new all the reasons why they secretly detested him, he was so young he could get away with shaving once or twice a week while they did it every day. He looked barely strong enough to hold a rifle, let alone fire it accurately. Neither had Albert seen any combat experience, while they had all seen two or three battles. Worst of all, they were under his command. The ride continued this way for a almost an hour, until the truck came to sudden halt. Albert thought they had finally reached the front lines, and was about to give the grumpy squad the order to disembark when an explosion ripped the vehicle to shreds, sending men and mechanical parts flying. Albert landed with a tremendous THUNK, head-first against a tree. The last thing he remembered before becoming unconscious was seeing the shredded remains of the unfortunate half-track.
After Albert regained his consciousness he tried to remember what had happened. After his memory came back, he decided to look around and see what happened to his squad. A few minutes of searching revealed his squad was all KIA except for him. As Albert walked back towards the destroyed half-track, he noticed new sets of tracks running along the road, headed towards where the Germans had come from earlier in the day. The young soldier new in an instant he was now behind French lines! With this came the question, how was he supposed to get back? Albert decided his best bet was to follow the road. It would most likely end in a confrontation with French units, but Albert knew if he was careful enough he could make it back without dying.
When the lost German had been walking for almost two hours when he began to signs of fighting. Corpses, destroyed vehicles, and bomb craters littered the country-side. It looked like there had been heavy fighting in the area. Albert tried his best to concentrate on other things, like the three people walking towards him up the road. Albert's heart skipped a beat, they were French! As fast as he could Albert ducked into a semi-ruined building. The three French soldiers came closer. Soon Albert could here their voices, all he could understand was, "......... Germans..... ruins.... find them.... alright?..... yes..." Albert's heart skipped another beat, they weren't just going to pass him by, they were going to look in the ruins of the building! The door began to creak open and a grenade rolled inside. Albert barely had time to jump out a window before the grenade exploded. Then he heard more French voices
"I ..... something!" Abert thought fast, if he was fast enough he could make it to the woods a few dozen meters away. If he wasn't....
Albert decided not to think about that. Instead he jumped up and ran like a mad man for the forest. Just as he reached it he heard a yell form the French, and the bullets began slamming into the ground behind him. But they where to slow, in a few moments there was now way they could see him.
Albert stopped and rested next to tree. It had been almost ten minutes of non-stop running since he had barely escaped the French soldiers. Albert was beginning to think he was safe when he saw about a dozen people coming towards him. Just when Albert was about to but put his hands in the air, to tired to resist, he saw the iron crosses on their grey uniforms. Before Albert could say anything, the lead German soldier pointed his rifle at a Albert and said "Nicht bewegen!"
"Nicht schießen! Ich bin Deutscher!" Came Albert's weary reply. The other soldiers, seeing the man was obviously German lowered their weapons. "Gut," Their leader pointed behind the him. "Camp ist wieder da. Jetzt sich zu bewegen, ihre immer noch hier herum Französisch!" "Dank!" Albert said ran with the last of his strength towards the German camp.
