Name: Christoph Jakob
Nationality: German
Army: Axis
Character History:
Christoph Jakob was born 14th January 1914 into a military family living in Heidelberg, the home of the NSDAP, the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Workers' Party). During the Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) on 9 November 1938, Nazis burned down synagogues at two locations in the city. The next day they started systematic deportation of Jews, and sent 150 Jews to the Dachau concentration camp. On 22 October 1940, during the "Wagner Buerckel event", the Nazis deported 6000 local Jews, including 280 from Heidelberg, to a concentration camp in France, Camp Gurs.
It the time leading up to these events Christoph had been schooled and raised to believe in the Fatherland. He joined the Heer the day he graduated working his way up the ranks with a natural leadership and iron will. The defeat Germany had suffered in the Great War had taken a heavy toll on the country, but Christoph’s parents where loyal to Germany and taught him that they would have a second chance. That second chance came when Hitler came to power in 1933 and brought in the Nazi regime. With Hitler came the Waffen-SS, and due to Christoph’s military record he was selected to attend Bad Tölz, an SS-Junkerschulen (Officiers Training Academy) in Bavaria. In the SS-Junkerschulen he reached the rank of Standartenjunker, by passing physical screenings, written examinations, and displaying military tactical and leadership traits. This granted him the rank of SS-Hauptsturmführer after his 10 months of training.
After participating in the invasion of Poland, Christoph was transferred to the head of a SS-Totenkopfverbände (Death’s-Head Battalion). During his time there he oversaw the executions and slave labour of thousands Jews before requesting to be transferred to the SS Division Totenkopf at the outbreak of WWII. Totenkopf was initially held in reserve during the assault into France and the Low Countries in May 1940. They were committed on 16 May to the Front in Belgium. The Totenkopf soldiers fought fanatically, suffering heavy losses.
Within a week of this initial commitment the division's first war crime had already been committed. At Le Paradis 4th Kompanie, I Abteilung, commanded by SS-Obersturmführer Fritz Knöchlein, machine-gunned 97 out of 99 British officers and members of the Royal Norfolk Regiment after they had surrendered to them; two survived. After the war, Knöchlein was tried by a British Court and convicted for war crimes in 1948. He was sentenced to death and hanged.
Christoph also committed war crimes but has yet to be caught. He executes most of his prisoners on the spot and tortures those he leaves alive for information. The duration of the torture depends on the strength of those under his knife. The sooner they give him the info he wants, the sooner he executes them.
Military Rank: SS-Hauptsturmführer / Captain (Aiming High. If this rank is unavailable to me could I have the highest rank possible please.)
Thick wooden doors swung open and Hauptsturmführer Jakob marched into the busy room. He scanned the room and its occupants, most of them secretaries rushing about passing on reports and files, a few officers where mingling about, reading reports and discussing troop movements. Christoph was standing in a small command room of an outpost village on the front lines. The men and women here where busy organising a defence of the village, writing up orders and double checking them with the Hauptmann. The village was under the control of the Heer and Christoph had been sent here to make sure the Hauptmann was doing his job properly.
Christoph could see that everyone was extremely busy and he knew that his presence would distract the men and women from performing their tasks. Without a word he turned on his heel and left, he was tired anyway, he had just spent most of the day travelling to the village. His ordonnanz (Orderly) ran up to him.
“Hauptsturmführer. Ihr Zimmer vorbereitet wurde, ist es auf diese Weise Herr.” He gestured his with his hand towards a small cottage. Christoph nodded and walked off to his cottage, opening the door and inspecting the room, his ordonnanz marched over to the Staff Car to collect Christoph’s luggage.
Christoph was just inspecting the bathroom when a howl came from overhead, followed almost immediately after by a loud explosion. The ground shook and the cottage rattled, Christoph ran to the door just in time to see more shells land, kicking up massive amounts of dirt before they finaly struck the building the command room was in, more shells pummelled the building into rubble, Christoph darted back into the bathroom just as a round clipped the side of his cottage, throwing him against the wall and collapsing the front half of the roof. The shelling continued as his vision blurred and he slipped into unconsciousness.
Hours later Christoph’s eyes flickered open, he was half buried under rubble his uniform shredded by the debris. He struggled out from under the rubble and stumbled to his feet. He took a few moments to get his bearings and checked himself over for injuries. Dried blood covered the back of his head, after he was sure there where not other injuries he climbed over the rubble of his half destroyed cottage and surveyed the area before him. The headquarters was nothing but smoking craters, his car had taken a glancing hit and was on its side, he could see his ordonnanz’s arm laying about ten feet from the ruined car, it still clutched one of the Hauptsturmführer’s bags.
Movement caught Christoph’s eye and he ducked behind a ruined wall, a squad of American soldiers where sifting though the ruined command post, Christoph exhaled angrily and reached for his Luger, only to find it missing. His rage only grew, he had no weapon, he would have to escape the village and make his way back to a German controlled area, hell, he’d even settle for Italian. Nightfall was approaching so he retreated back into his ruined cottage to wait for darkness.
The night came slowly, thankfully the sky was moonless and the land dark. Christoph could hear the American soldiers talking and laughing, they must have been left behind too act as a checkpoint. He had counted six men before the sun had set, and the whole time he had been waiting he hadn’t heard any more show up. It should be easy to escape. He thought for a moment about the situation he was, how quickly it had turned. He had been sent to make sure that the Heer Hauptmann was competent enough hold the village and keep the lines moving forward. Not even fifteen minutes after Christoph had arrived the village was in ruins and a few hours later the lines had shifted, Ludicrous really.
Now that nightfall would hide his movements, he slipped out into the village, sticking close to the wall of his cottage and moving slowly, as far as he could tell the six soldiers where sill loitering around the destroyed command post, he had to circumnavigate that building in order to head back towards German occupied territory. It was too risky to cut along the inside of the buildings and there might be a patrol around the outskirts, his only real option was to back out of the village and into the fields, there in the long grass and scattered clumps of tree’s he could make his way around the village and back towards his own lines.
It took him twenty minutes to make it to the edge of the village, due to his slow and perhaps overly cautious movements, he saw no reason to take a risk and rush, once safely in the fields he managed to make it around the village safely and began making his way back to his own lines. He would have a long night of walking ahead of him.
