Undivided {JOE}

[Maddie Adler]

Maddie had spent a few days herself in the hospital after her 'meeting' with a car. She was a little sore, but nothing major was broken or damaged thankfully. She tended to her patients with the same care and love as she did before, just with a little pain.

Maddie tended to a few soldiers who had severe head injuries. One or two of them didn't even remember who they were or where they were. It was heartbreaking really. Still she did her duties well.

She gave them water and made sure their fevers didn't get too high. Most of them had fevers over 102. Infection was clearly setting in their wounds. She gently patted their foreheads with damp cool water, trying to get their fevers to go down. Most had started to become delierious, while others were still holding on pretty well.

The doctor asked for her assistance in aiding him with another head injury but this one was much more severe. Blood was flowing freely from a wound in the front of his head. She placed both hands on it with a gauze. She felt the warm blood flowing over her hands and she was sure she was able to see parts of the skull beneath the wound. Her stomach flipped a bit and she swallowed. This had to be the worst injury she had seen in a long time. After a few moments, the man went still. He was gone.

Maddie wiped her hands clean of the blood and walked away, feeling the back of her throat aching. She wanted to burst into tears right then and there but she managed to keep it together . At some point she knew she would explode

[Cpl. Joe Claude]

It wasn't a usual patient in one of the singular rooms today. The man who was being treated was a Jew, an American prisoner and had been struck down with a bad infection. He had been taken from Otto Wolff due to his safety from the evil Strumfelder; transferred to a concentration camp but had been picked out to work in another German Nazi member's garden. He was in the hospital due to the employer (owner more like) wanting him to be “clean” for his garden.

He was staring at the wall, his hands trailing his face where the scars were still present; deep and harsh against his fingertips. He sighed and rested his head against the cold wall. He was dressed in workers clothing; not the horrific type from the camps but still very unpleasant, unflattering garments.

He was so sick, and tired of this war. He wanted to either die or be let free but neither were going to happen soon...dying might but his body was putting up a fight and he had a few more lives left.

The door opened and in came two men in SS uniforms, behind them was a doctor. The doctor muttered to one of the men – something along the lines of getting a nurse to help – and the SS man disappeared suddenly, striding off down the corridor.

The doctor muttered in German to the remaining SS man and then spoke sharply in German to Joe who stood up, nodding and biting his lip. He felt his bones against his clothing and winced, he was so thin. The doctor came forward, grabbing Joe's chin and pushing it upwards, inspecting the marks on his face and tutting slightly before taking a syringe from his pocket and barked at the SS man to grab Joe's body...

Maddie was called by an SS man and she hurried over to him. They needed help with a man who was badly infected. She spied a man who was incredibly thin. Immediately her heart went out to him. She turned to the doctor and said to him sharply.

"Ich pflege dieser Mann. Ich habe Zeit. Go neigen dazu, den anderen Patienten!" she said.

The men nodded and handed her the syringe. She took it and waited for the men to leave. He apparently was American. He looked frail and thin. She headed over to him.

"Sit down" Maddie said to him in English in a soft tone. "This is an antibiotic called Penicillin. It should help with the infection, but you need a shot every 2 hours" Maddie explained to him softly. "Now, you need to lie still. I'm going to administer it to you"

She grabbed a alcohol soaked gauze and gently cleaned an area on his upper arm. She pressed the needle tip to his skin and raised her eyes to his.

"Are you ready?" she asked him studying him. He wasn't wearing the normal soldier's uniform, but looked more like a prisoner of some sort. He was badly emaciated. Once Maddie injected the antibiotic, she was going to get him some food and water. He appeared as though he hadn't eaten in days. Her dark hair was pulled into a ponytail, but a few strands fell and framed her dark eyes. She had a kind expression on her face but she was more concerned with getting this infection he had cleared up.

"I will get you some food and water in a few minutes." she said to him and waited

Ich pflege dieser Mann. Ich habe Zeit. Go neigen dazu, den anderen Patienten!--I will take care of this man. I have time. Go tend to the other patients!

The nurse who came in was beautiful. Joe glared as the doctor left the room...the last time he had had a doctor treat him had been Strumfelder...and that had not been a pleasant experience at all. The nurse spoke to him in English and he did what he was told, watching her.

He obviously knew what Penicillin was...he'd been in the army after all. But he had learnt to not say anything in front of people. He glanced away from the girl and noticed the doctor lingering at the door.

”Er ist ein Jude ... nicht behandeln ihn mit Respekt vermissen”

Joe turned and glanced at the nurse; he lay down on the cold bed; his eyes stared at the ceiling, silent and his face was emotionless. He bit his lip slightly as he felt the slight pain on his upper arm. She spoke to him and his eyes met hers, he nodded and he felt the needle go in to cure the infection.

”I will get you some food and water in a few minutes.”

He nodded, but did not smile. He turned his head away from her and back up to the ceiling, his breathing rushed slightly.

Maddie administered the injection and heard the doctor linger at the door way. She wiped the injection site clean with alcohol again and slowly tuned around, glaring at the doctor.

"Sie sorgen über ihre Patienten. Ich werde Sorgen über mir." she said to him coldly and ignored him.

Once she was done, she hurried to get him some food and water. She sat down on the opposite cot and tilted her head.

"What happened to you?" she asked him softly and quietly.

She'd never seen someone so badly mal nutritioned. She could'n't believe it. Her heart went to him. Maddie didn't care who you were or where you came from. Everyone deserved the respect no matter what. These people were injured for Christ's sake. They werent' animals that deserved to be treated horribly simply because of their nationality.

"You need to eat slowly, so your body gets used to food again being you're so badly malnutritioned" Maddie explained to him

She could give him a little saline solution later, but once he had more strenght and had eaten something to build up his resistance a little more.

She turned back to the doctor, with an arched eyebrow.

"Dont haben sie Patienten zu erledigen? Kann ich Pflege von ihm" Maddie asked him.

She gently adjusted the bandage around his leg, waiting for him to respond.
