James peered over the ruins of a low brick fence; the building in front of him looked fairly solid and would make for a good observation post for the main highway, bombs or artillery hadn’t hit most of the buildings in this area so they where still in pretty good condition. Stacking up behind him was his squad, Grosser, Horsly, Harris, Teller, Black and Meers. They where good men, and well trained, but this was their first mission into enemy territory and James hoped they would be able to handle it. It was also his first patrol as well; he would have to prove himself. He looked at each man individually; Jack Grosser was short and built like a bulldog, his thick chest looked like it wanted to burst out of his uniform. Ben Horsly was quite tall and skinny, the others called him “stretch” and even his M1 Garand looked short next to him. Craig Harris was of medium build and had a large moustache that made him look more like a car salesman then a soldier. Franky Teller looked to be the youngest, James thought he had lied about his age in order to join but could find no proof of his age. Tom Black was the smallest and skinniest of the lot, but he had an unbelievable amount of speed and was quite accurate with his M1, and Alan Meers was bringing up the rear, the tough little red head liked to brag that he was unmatched with a blade.
With a grunt James stood up and ran forward to the back door of the building, his men followed him, Grosser and Harris stacked up across him while the others came in behind him. James mouthed a countdown from three before signalling Grosser, who jumped back from the wall and put a kick into the door so strong that it snapped off its rusty hinges and fell to the floor. Before the door had even hit the ground Harris was though the frame and into the building, followed quickly by Grosser, James and the others. They spread out and found themselves in a large room with four doors on the east and west walls and a large double door directly ahead of them. James gave quick motions with his hands to each door and his soldiers split into pairs and breached them, checking to make sure the building was empty of enemy troops. Their footsteps echoed much louder then James liked in the large empty rooms, the whole building had been sacked, and not a single scrap of furniture was left. With a deep sigh James looked at his watch, 1042 hours. It had taken far too long for them to get here.
Teller and Meers came trotting over to him from the far left room.
‘Sir, there’s a burning truck outside blowing thick smoke down the street.’
‘Was it hit by a shell?’
‘No sir, it just looks like someone set it on fire.’ James moved forward into the room and peered out the window, the truck was indeed in ideal condition, save for the flames licking over its cargo hold.
‘Ok, forget the truck. If there was anything vital in it its long gone.’ He walked back into the main room, signalling for his men to group up on him.
‘Ok boys, I want at least two sets of eyes on that highway at all times, the truck may have broken down and been abandoned by a convoy. Enemy patrols haven’t been game enough to come this far out yet but HQ thinks they may be using this road as a supply rout, if so, they may have small patrols or checkpoints along it so be alert. Black and Teller, you two take the left room, Harris and Grosser, you two take the right. Horsly and Meers I you two on either door, if the others see something you let me know right away.’
The men moved off quickly, each picking a window so they could see the highway the smoke made it difficult to see much down the west road, but they manned their positions without complaint.
