Joseph was born April 13, 1919 in Leningrad, Russia. As a young boy Joseph was always getting into mischief. If he was supposed to be asleep he was "spying" on his parents. If he was supposed to be cleaning his room he was doing the opposite to his older sister's. After receiving only minimal schooling Joseph went to work in a weapons factory. Though he only earned a small amount of money a month and he was young Joseph continued to work, because he knew if he didn't his family would not have enough money to live on. One day during Joseph's third year working in the factory a piece of wire snapped right as Joseph was walking by it. He managed to move his head away just in time, but the wire still ended up cutting him in the chest, causing him to slip into unconsciousness. Two days later Joseph Woke-up, back in his own home. After he had a meal Joseph asked his mother and father why they had not taken him to hospital. They replied that the only hospital they could afford to take him to said they could not accept him due to "overcrowding", though they had watched other patients come and go as they were talking. After healing-up Joseph went back to the same factory to work.
When the Germans invaded Russia in 1941 Joseph was quickly conscripted into the Red Army. During his five days of basic training Joseph proved himself most willing to fight and die for the motherland and the communist cause. Because of this Joseph was given a promotion and put in charge of a squad. During his first battle Joseph led his troops bravely through the enemy fire. The casualties were high but he rallied his men and pushed on. Eventually causing the Germans to retreat. After the battle Joseph was placed in the 28th Motor Rifle Regiment.

It was cold, rainy, and muddy, but Joseph was used to it. Even as it all got worse, he didn't care. There were worse things to think about, like how to get back to his unit. Joseph had been wondering around the Russian country side for hours. As walked along he tried to recall the days previous events. Joseph had been leading a patrol, they had encountered Germans, they had all but him been killed. The young communist tightened his fist. "Why was no else still alive? How did I even survive the skirmish?" Joseph's felt like his mind had gone blank. He just couldn't remember. As he walked on the feeling that he was being followed began to grow. At first he just shook it off, but it wouldn't go away. Finally Joseph turned around to take a look behind him. He could see nothing out of the ordinary, so he turned back around and continued walking in the direction he hoped friendly lines were located. CRACKCRACKCARCKCARCKCRACK. Joseph dropped to the muddy ground as bullets sped over him.
Joseph quickly turned around. There was a German firing his MP-40 from behind a tree. More bullets impacted the mud around Joseph as he raised his rifle to his shoulder and fired. CRACK. The German slumped to the ground, dead. Joseph quickly got to his feet. He looked around for more Germans, but he saw none so he began to run were he hoped Russian lines were. Faster and faster he ren untill he felt he couldn't run any longer. When he stoped a voive called out. "Halt! Identify your-self!" Joseph halted abruptly. "Well!" "Comrade! Comrade!" Joseph stepped past the trees that the Russian sentry was standing behind. The sentry aimed his gun at Joseph but lowered it when he saw that Joseph was a Russian. "Welcome back to friendly lines comrade!"
