Character History:
Robert Francis Conner was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 1st, 1923, the
oldest of William and Helen Conner's four sons. He and his brothers spent their
summers at their Grandfather's horse ranch in Texas. His grandfather started
teaching him to shoot when he was six, as well as his brothers.
A star quarterback on his High school team, Robert turned down a football
scholarship at the University of Alabama to join the Army, following in his father's
foot steps (William Conner fought in The Great War,) and volunteered for the newly
formed Airborne Command. His cousin, a Gunner's Mate in the Navy, was killed in the
attack on Pearl Harbor.
Before leaving for boot camp he eloped with his girlfriend, Charlotte Mitchell. Two
months later he received a letter from her telling him that she was pregnant.
All three of his brothers also volunteered for the Airborne once they turned
eighteen. Jonathan, the second oldest, served with the 503rd Regimental Combat Team
and was killed at Markham Valley. George, the youngest, was wounded during
Operation Husky and awarded the purple heart and the Silver Star for his actions
against the enemy.

Robert felt a sudden, violent jolt as he jumped from the plane and his chute
deployed. In the distance he heard the faint sound of machine gun fire and the boom
of artillary. He landed and reached for his Garand, checking the chamber to varify
it was loaded. He joined up with the rest of his squad and followed them down the
dark country road.
Suddenly a gunshot broke the silence, this one much closer, and the man in front of
Conner fell to the ground clutching his stomach. The gun fire continued as the
company scrambled for cover and fired blindly into the night. Merkawitz and Hogan,
the company machine gun team, were cut down by sniper fire as they scrambled to get
their gun on line.
Conner spotted the German sniper and leapt to his feet emptying his Garand into him.
He fell from the tree and Conner sprinted for the M2 Browning. He racked the bolt
back, chambering a round, and pressed the trigger until the belt ran dry, straffing
the bushes in front of the US line with fifty caliber bullets. He sprang back to
his feet as he heard the click indicating an empty chamber. He raised his rifle
back to his shoulder and continued firing into the brush.

He grasped a new clip and shoved it into the weapon, jerking the bolt back to load
the first round.

He let his rifle drop to his side as he grasped a grenade with his left hand, pulled
the pin with his teeth and chucked it towards the Germans.
BOOM!
"Hold your fire!" he heard the company CO, Captain Greggs, shout over the ruckas.
A deathly silence took hold of the forrest.
"First Sqaud, your with me" He added as he started walking across the road.
Conner fell in behind the Captain with Sergeant Peters, the squad commander to his right. Slowly the crept towards the enemy position. Greggs vaulted over a shrub and caught a 9mm bullet in the leg, falling back against a tree. Conner raced after him and held his Garand on the German.
"Lassen Sie fallen es!" Conner shouted at him and he complied tossing his Luger to the ground, the weapon landed at his feet he kept his eyes on his prisoner as he bent down to pick it up and stuffed it in his waistband.
"MEDIC! THE CAPTAIN'S BEEN HIT!" He called out as he marched the German back to his company.
