Ulrich Hetzenauer regain conscience several hours after few floors of a building collapsed from being hit with bombs and tank shells. He found himself in a building, middle of enemy occupied town. Only thing he could do is find a farm house in the nearby, he hide out until the Werhmacht regains lost grounds or opens a gap in the enemy lines. Hetzenauer goes out the back door, seeing an alley leading to the nearby stream that will eventually lead to a nearby river. Ulrich Hetzenauer still suffering from a headache, slowly proceeds across the street into the alley towards the stream. Enemy patrols behind him, slowly catching up. Ich werde nicht zu erfassen... .... oder getötet ... Ich muss hier raus, he was saying to himself as reaches the stream. He nearly fell into the stream from being light-headed. Follow the stream , he thought. Staying as close to the tall-left bank of the stream that once been a river itself, Hetzenauer walks cautiously towards the river.
Once near it, he literally collapse a pile of sticks and branches covering a log. Hetzenauer tries to catch his breath. However, he realized an enemy patrol was heading straight at him. Total of four GI's armed with M1's, Hetzenauer decided to make his stand right behind the pile because there is no way he could outrun four fresh GI's. Propped the rifle on the log with sticks, twigs, branches of leaves, and grass cover most of his position, Hetzenauer looks down sight and starts to assess the possible situation. From the distance of three hundred meters or more, it was difficult to distinguish ranks and roles of each GI. At three hundred meters, Hetzenauer decided to engage the closest GI.
The trigger was squeezed, a sound of a pin clicked soon followed by bang and a crackle as the first round from the Karabiner took flight over the three hundred meters. It hit the leading GI in the gut, causing him to stagger backwards for few steps before falling to the ground. the other three GI's were slow at reacting. Two more clicks, echo of bangs and crackles followed as two shots sped through the air and hit the two following GI's in the various area of the torso. The last GI dropped down to the ground.
Hetzenauer thinking, this the best opportunity to get up and move, and done so without hesitation. It was not long until Hetzenauer collapsed from exhaustion. He woke in a hospital bed, he was not sure where he was....
