What Army will Your Character Serve Beneath?
German Army
Character History:
Dieter was born in the town of Meissen into a wealthy family that consisted of his mother Sofie, father Hugo and older brother, Hendrik. Even when the boys were very young, it was evident they were very different from each other. Where as Hendrik was thoughtful, obedient and quiet, Dieter was always running around and stirring up some kind of trouble.
Dieter's family was quite rich with Dieter's father, Hugo Reinz, owning a lot of land and a factory. Hugo wished that both of his sons would get a good education and when the time would come, one of them could take over the family business. Hendrik took interest in reading and writing at a very young age. Dieter loved motorbikes and cars - he lived from the sheer sensation of speed when driving them and felt great satisfaction when fixing them up. Unfortunately Dieter hated books with a passion and he found it difficult to concentrate on anything at school.
As the young men grew older, the differences in them became even more evident than earlier. Where as young Hendrik started studying to become a doctor, Dieter started wasting his father's money on booze, parties and pretty girls. Dieter would spend his time loitering around, driving to countryside with girls, drinking and making a game of going out to shoot any small animals that had the misfortune of venturing near, just for fun. Once he even secretly shot a dog that belonged to his neighbor and was naturally found the perpetrator of this crime. His father had to pay the neighbor for the dog and the townspeople found all the more reason to call Dieter a spawn of the devil. That boy just was no good at all!
Dieter never really realized why he liked being such a pain to other people. Hugo never forgot to mention what a splendid son Hendrik was and how Dieter should follow his example if he ever wanted to become anything. The more Hugo told Dieter to mend his ways, the more he distanced himself from the family and found new ways of making other people miserable.
Dieter's life took a sharp change when he was on one his countless road trips and in his slightly intoxicated state could no longer maintain control of his vehicle. His car veered off the road and crashed into a deep ditch, missing a huge tree just barely. When it was only Dieter who had been injured and his father held a certain authority among the locals, he never got into trouble for it. The only reminders of this incident were a nasty scar on his thigh and a trashed Mercedes.
Dieter dropped out of university and his father finally felt he had seen enough of his son's foolishness. He ordered Dieter to move to Dresden and join the military school there. Dieter himself had no interest in the military, taking orders or dying for a "noble cause". It didn't help to have an exceptionally ruthless instructor finding fault in anything Dieter did, it reminded him too much of his own father. He felt even more scornful for being sent into this place and he started thinking of ways of getting out of this situation.
However, when staying in Dresden he met a young man of his age who started talking about the Nazi ideals. Dieter already had a hatred towards the whole world because he felt he could never become anything like his older brother. It was not his fault that he had not succeeded like him, it was the fault of other people.. the entire outside world, they were the ones that kept pushing him down! It was easy to direct that rage towards the Jews instead and the ideologies of the Nazi party seemed very fitting for him.
Now Dieter could find some sense and meaning to being in the army and naturally the proud Fatherland greatly needed all of it's soldiers. In 1937 at the age of 23, Dieter joined the fight for his homeland and for the Führer.
Military Rank:
- I'm happy with any rank that is given to Dieter. I believe he has not really been trying to be very heroic so far and would rather play things safe, he has not been too passionate about advancing in ranks yet. Any responsility he has gotten has been most likely just been thrust upon him.
Writing Sample:
A storm of heavy rain drops battered the leaves of the trees in the forest. Dieter gripped his Mauser rifle tighter, his wet fingers slipping slightly on the weapon. Cold water was running down his helmet and dripping down inside his jacket, but he hardly noticed it. He knew someone was out there and it wasn't anyone from the Wehrmacht, that he knew. Stupidly he had gotten separated from the others because of one measly smoke and now he was all alone here, not sure which way he should have been heading to. The rainfall was so heavy it made things hard to see and muffled all the sounds of the forest. But still.. he could feel his spine tingling. Someone was watching him right at this very moment.
Dieter crouched and blinked the water from his eyes. He forced himself to remain calm, to steady his breathing and to think clearly. The most important thing now was to get back to the others. Did he remember them passing through that huge tree there? Wasn't there supposed to be a big rock near it also? It wouldn't hurt to check it out at least, Dieter figured, so he started sneaking carefully towards the old tree, all the time praying he would also find that precious rock he was sure he had seen earlier.
He advanced carefully towards the tree and soon he could see there indeed was a big rock not too far from the place. Dieter sighed with relief and felt safer already, so he straightened his back and lowered his rifle. Clearly this was a huge mistake, because as soon as he had done that, a bullet whizzed past him and hit the tree nearby. Dieter forgot to breathe for a moment and time seemed to stop. The hair at the back of his head stood up and he could clearly feel each one of the cold raindrops that fell on his skin. Just for that moment, the forest was eerily silent.
It felt like he had stood there for a minute at least, but the moment most likely lasted only for a few seconds or so. Dieter quickly threw himself down on the ground and could feel his knee connecting painfully with a rock that was fiendishly hidden beneath the soft mossy forest floor. More bullets flew past him and Dieter panicked at first, cowering his head with his other hand and squeezing his eyes shut. His heart was pounding so hard it felt like it almost drowned out the sounds of rain and gunshots. Dieter forced his eyes open and saw another bullet hitting a tree and throwing splinters around. Dieter tried to clear his mind, to think this through before making any hasty decisions. If the bullet hit the tree like that, it meant that the attacker was just behind him. Maybe he just couldn't see Dieter very well through all the rain. It seemed like as if he was just shooting around, hoping to hit him by blind luck.
Were the others far away, would they hear the shots? Or would the rain muffle out the sounds and leave Dieter all alone with his attacker? Who knows, there might be a whole group of allies hiding behind the trees. Dieter swallowed hard and then suddenly felt a strong will to survive, whatever the odds. The panic was replaced with determination and he started crawling towards the old tree, the wet forest floor was soaking through whatever parts of his clothes had still remained dry earlier. Finally reaching the safety of the old oak tree, he stumbled into a sitting position and tried to control his hands from shaking too much.
Checking his weapon and loading it, Dieter carefully tried to peek towards the direction where he figured the shots had been coming from. The storm clouds had made the sky dark and what little light might have remained hardly seeped through the branches of the old forest. A new shot hit the tree just near Dieter's head and he nearly dropped his weapon in surprise, hastily shielding himself behind the old oak again.
Dieter cursed silently and frowned. If he ran away, he would just get shot in the back, he had to take control of the situation somehow. Maybe he could as well have a go at blind shooting, he didn't know exactly where his attacker was anyway. Taking a deep breath, he readied his weapon and waited for a moment, gathering courage and steadying his hands. After feeling more calm again, he swung his weapon around and pointed it towards the cluster of trees he figured the shots were coming from. Dieter fired three shots towards his seemingly invisible attacker and then quickly withdrew to sit behind the tree again in case of any counterfire. Almost instantly after doing so he could hear a blood-curling scream coming from not too far away. Dieter blinked and listened to the sweet sound of someone crying out in agony. He had actually hit someone!
Dieter waited for a moment and listened to the sounds before peeking from behind the tree. He could see an American soldier writhing in pain just ten steps away from him. Apparently the soldier had decided to attack him outright when he had not done anything to defend himself and one of Dieter's lucky shots had stopped his advance. If he had waited for any longer, the enemy soldier would have just outright executed him.
The young man smiled in astonishment and then let out a small laugh. What a lucky shot! He laughed more loudly just from pure relief and also from the exhilarating rush of adrenaline that was running through his veins. Sitting next to the tree he leaned his head against the tree and laughed, letting the sweet rain fall on his face and having it remind him how wonderful it was to be alive.
Dieter soon remembered his situation again, though, and he hastily rose up to his feet and took one last glance at the allied solder. He grinned to himself once more before starting his way back to the direction he knew the others from his division most likely were. What a lucky shot, he smirked to himself and patted his rifle with satisfaction, not even minding his wet clothes at all.
