Name: Vaalto Laukkanen
Nationality: Finnish
What Army will Your Character Serve Beneath? Wehrmacht
Character History:
Vaalto was born in Kaamanen, Finland in 1921. His mother was a saleswoman who would go around Europe selling the saunas his father made. His father owned ‘Laukkanen Saunas,’ a small hand crafting sauna maker whose products were set up all over northern Europe. His father, Somya Laukkanen hired some of the local boys of the town to cut trees before he fashioned them into the steam house.
Vaalto was one of the stranger looking Scandinavians in that he had light brown hair and green eyes rather than the ever so clichéd blonde hair. Aside from his appearance, Vaalto grew up like any good Finn; at the age of ten, his father took him hunting. Winter brought caribou and fall brought deer to the northernmost woods of the Finnish landscape.
His father had fought in The Great War under the Russian Army. He came home and fought for the Finnish Independence. In the Great War he was in the 3rd Army and carried a Mosin-Nagant, as a rifleman. He still had the rifle when he came home.
When Vaalto turned 15 his father gave him a Mosen-Nagant to hunt with. Vaalto was also hunt alone. In this time, Vaalto thought about better ways to find and kill his prey. He began taking days to track and kill a caribou with deadly efficiency. When he watched his prey, he would study it to see its weaknesses, patterns, and habits to use against them. It always ended up with dead prey.
At age 17 Vaalto went and worked in his father’s sauna making business. He started by being with the lumberjacks and cutting down trees, leading the horses to the lumber mills, and carrying the felled timber. The work was hard and tedious. After working in the business for a year, he joined the Finnish Army. He was in the 1st Army, and an infantryman when the Russians attacked.
Military Rank:
Unterscharführer
Writing Sample:
Vaalto was putting on his wooden skis that he made from a tree in the Alpine forest. His mission was to scout out enemy defenses before the next day’s assault.
He tightened the skis, then he was off, gliding on the surface of the winter wonderland that the Russians were turning into a blood bath. He could see the ski tracks of the other scouts beside his own tracks. Vaalto’s mission was to survey the Soviet 1st Shock Army unit stationed on the outskirts of the woodland. The area was beautiful, and the sub-zero temperature made life flow through Vaalto.
The snow was falling around the clump of trees he was near. Vaalto was concealed in his winter camouflage. The worst thing that could have happened did of course happen. Vaalto soon ran into a group of Soviet soldiers, their rifles ready and loaded. The rifles were Mosin-Nagants, the same rifle the unlucky Finn carried. Before Vaalto could reach for his rifle, he was shot in the left shoulder. The last thing he saw was the stock of a rifle slamming into his face as he felt the snow against his face. He tasted the salty blood that was flowing from his head, falling unconscious as a squad of Soviet soldiers surrounded him.
Vaalto could see light through the haze that was his blurred vision. Then he felt the adrenaline pulsing through his veins making him jump, only to fall down while clutching his head. Then, the fact hit him; he was in the middle of the forest with no rifle, no grenade, no skis and no mask. The thought of suicide came to mind, but then it quickly went away to a better thought of reporting back to base. The snow gave way when he stood up, and Vaalto’s leg went 30cm into the snow. “Kirota, hanki,” he briefly swore.
His footsteps were slow and uneven as he walked back to the base. A noise sounded from behind him as he walked. Turning around with his knife in hand, he searched for the source of the sound. The voice heavy Nordic accent person came out “Asettua itse, olen sinun kaveri , minun maine on Sulo Leukemia, olen sala-ampuja. Mikä on sinun maine , ja Kuinka toukokuu, auttaa te?”
“I-KIRJAIN olen kotona kaivata -lta ehtiminen taaksepäin jotta minun nojata , I-KIRJAIN hankkia merkittävä ilmianto jokseenkin huominen hyökkäys.” Vaalto replied to the strange man. After some intense thought the sniper decided to bring Vaalto back to base.
