What Army will Your Character Serve Beneath?
German Wehrmacht
Character History:
Werner was born 1917 in Dresden/ Saxony in an old aristocratic family. His father served in World War I as a "Generaloberst" in the German army and raised him very strikt.
He got punished hard for even minor mistakes like not saluting to his fathers friends with enough respect.
When Werner became 10 he discovered something new in his life, sports. If it was athletics, football, swimming or boxing, Werner loved all kinds of sports and it looked like sports do love him too. He used to have success in everything he tried.
He even became vize- champion in the German youth boxing championships 1930.
Besides sports there was one thing more important to Werner than anything else, his little sister Annnemarie.
When she had problems, he always was there to help.
Once he got involved into a fight with 2 older boys that had threatened her. Although he didn’t even had a chance, Werner faced them and got terribly beaten. He even had to stay in hospital for several weeks.
With 15 Werner got to know a new classmate that just moved from Bavaria. Together they did their first climbing trips into the mountains. And mountain climbing was just another challenge, which Werner loved to succeed in.
After getting more experienced in climbing he also started his own trips into the mountains and sometimes he used to take some other friends with him.
But one of those trips ended up in a big accident. Thomas, one of Werner’s friends lost balance and died.
Because it was Thomas first climbing trip, Werner swore to never again loose somebody he is responsible for.
Following an advice from his father he volunteered to be a pilot in the German Luftwaffe in 1938. For Werner it looked just like the perfect challenge.
But after some pretty hard tests he finally got denied because his eyes were not as good as required.
So he started his military career in the Wehrmacht. He got trained in the use of Pak 36 anti- tank guns. Soon after Werner started, he realised that his fathers name was opening all the doors for him and so he received promotions quite quickly.
When the war started out, Werner did service in a "Panzerjäger" company and his unit took part in the last days of the attack on Poland. He participated in the German attack on Brest- Litowsk, where he got wounded by shrapnel. But he recovered quickly and returned to service after few weeks.
Military Rank:
Unteroffizier
Writing Sample:
Werner was surprised when he had a look at his watch. He was laying there for almost five hours. He must have fallen asleep for a little while.
Now he started to stretch out in the small foxhole he found. Luckily he found it, because it was a good hideout for the day. It would have been almost impossible for him to move while the sun was shinning outside.
“After sunset I will be able to continue my way to the German lines. Hopefully I will find some water, because my canteen is almost empty”, he thought to himself.
Yesterday at this moment he was sitting together with his comrades in their small bunker and was playing a game of cards. It felt like years ago.
Now, most of the comrades he played with were already dead. He was the only survivor of the patrol. They had orders to scout behind the Russian frontline and make some captives, but everything went wrong and they got discovered. Only he was able to hide away.
The sun went down slow and when it became completely dark, Werner took his K98 rifle, climbed out of his foxhole and started searching his way back to the German front. He tried his best to move as silent as possible in the bulky German army boots.
His nerves where that strained, that he did not even feel his thirst and hunger.
After several miles the wood was crossed by some kind of a street. Werner could hear the sounds of heavy trucks and low voices. They were directly heading into his direction.
Quickly he jumped back into the wood and hid himself behind a big bush.
After some minutes he could identify a bunch of trucks and three Katjusha rocket launchers moving along the street.
Directly in front of Werner the column stopped. On the other side of the road there was a clearance and the Katjushas now moved there, while the trucks continued their way. Werner got scared when he realised, that the Russians prepared the rocket launchers to fire. He was laying only several metres away from them. Quickly Werner tried to count the enemies.
He could see five Russian soldiers staying directly by the launchers and two more of them patrolling around the clearance.
They were way too many for him to handle alone. Also the noise of a fight would make it nearly impossible for him to get through the Russian lines back to his unit.
So he quickly decided to move back in the deeper forest and search for another way.
But he wanted to memorise the position of the Russian rocket launchers. They would be a gift for the German artillery.
There were no more complications for Werner in the next hour. Silently he advanced through the wood. Because of his good sense for orientation he knew that he must have been close to the front line. Suddenly a heavy machine gun started shooting into the dark. Quickly another mg attended the first one. Werner recognised the metallic sound of the Russian Maxim guns.
But the machine guns didn’t aim for him. They aimed for the direction, Werner assumed the German front to be. Now he could also hear single rifle shots and loud Russian voices. There was definitely something going on. The whole frontline was enlightened by flares in all colours of the rainbow. Werner thought about a German counterattack. That would be his chance to get through the Russian lines. The noise of fighting got even louder.
Werner counted silent to five, closed his eyes for a moment and started running like he never ran before in his life.
(OOC: Please don’t bother me for my bad grammar because I’m not a native English speaker.
But I speak German as my mother tongue and I guess you can put that in use pretty good here.
And take your time with my application because I’m going on a trip into the mountains tomorrow. No internet for the next ten or more days. But I would love to join you guys. Cheers.)
