Character Name: Horst Von Epp
Nationality: Prussian, German.
What Army will Your Character Serve Beneath?
Germany. Member of the 2nd Waffen SS Division, "Das Reich", 3rd SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment "Deutschland", 34th Company.
Character History:
Horst Von Epp was born a healthy handsome baby boy in February 1, 1920 in East Prussia, Germany.
Born into a wealthy industrialist and noble family which had ties with the German Royal Family and some major players of Germany's industrialists, bankers and politicians during the time, he became the next heir in line of the family's title of Herzog or English equivalent of Duke.
While Germany was still recovering from the disaster of World War I, Horst Von Epp grew in a comfortable enviroment, deep in the forest parts of Prussia in his family's secluded Manor.
House tutored by a family friend for the first few years of his childhood, it was soon found out, much to his father and mother's delight, that the boy was very intelligent, having a curious hunger of knowldege and gobbling up logic so fast that his tutor had to keep up. By the age of 6, he could read, write and speak German excellently. By the age of 8, he was the darling of the family while they went out into the forests, hunting for wild boars and other animals. He had a few friends, mostly his cousins and servants, but he was very shy, a trait that was to trouble him in his childhood life.
This was further complicated when the Great Depression struck, plunging Germany deeper already into poverty and economic ruin. His family was forced to make financial sacrifices and they soon moved away from their plush Manor to the busy streets of Berlin City. Taking a modest but well furnished and spacious apartment as their home, the young Horst was traumatized by the event but nevertheless adapted to the situation slowly. He found himself alone, since his cousins and their families split up and moved throughout Germany, and the army of servants that usually accompanied him became reduced to 2 maids.
This made the young Horst lonely, often found playing with himself with his toys or just reading books, studying.
Unbeknownst to him, since he was the favorite son in the family, and the most promising, the Epps agreed to solely send Horst into a Elite Academy where generations of Von Epps had been schooled. Since the tuition was expensive, the family pooled in their resources and Horst found himself packing his things as he went to the Academy to spend the rest of his childhood.
His first year was tough there, since most of the children in his class began to bully him for his shyness and stutter which he developed early on. He tried desperately to correct this along with his other social disabilities, and when nearing the end of his stay within the Academy, discovered he was a natrual leader without knowing it, having found himself the leader of the bullies that had formerly taunted him and having the charasima to lead them into conducting embarassing pranks on rival students, teachers and even the Head Master himself. They were so successful, they were never caught, but always suspected. Their pranks soon became the regular headache of the Head Master and when they all graduated, the Head Master was never so happier in his life, dancing around to himself during the ceremonies.
To noones surprise, Horst was one of the Valedictorians and graduated with his class with full honors in every rank and category. When he came home, his father and mother found themselves looking at a rugged teenager, ready for a future. Planning for him to join the family business, they never knew that he had other things in mind.
When the Nazi's took power in the '33 and took control of Germany, Horst Von Epp while still in the Academy, became transfixed with Hitler and made it his ambition to join and serve the Nazi Party. Following his graduation in 1938, at the age of 18, he joined the Nazi Party as a civilian since he missed out joining the Hitlerjugend, much to his family's disapproval and they disowned Horst after refusing their plea's to change his mind.
In 1940, when Himmler created the Waffen SS, Horst Von Epp, wanting to do something in his life, joined it and found himself training with other fellow recruits in Eastern Berlin with the rank of Mann (Private). After training he recieved the rank of Unteroffizier (Corporal) and found himself fighting in the opening battles of WWII in Poland as a Infantry Support Unit that was experimental, mixed with Panzers and several primitive half-tracks.
He recieved a commendation from his CO and was promoted a step up to Oberscharführer(Warrant Officer) and assigned to General Staff to give them his expeirences as a Infantry Combantant fighting alongside Panzer Units. In 1941, as Germany prepared for the offensive in France, he managed to request a transfer and was placed in a Panzer Division commanded by Erwin Rommel.
Promoted to Untersturmführer (2nd Lieutenant) he was assigned to a Panzer Platoon and along with Erwin Rommel's Division, was one of the few Panzer's to push the British into Dunkirk. For his participation and bravery he was promoted yet again to Obersturmführer (1st Lieutenant) and was given a Panzer platoon.
This time, he, along with several Panzer Units and SS Infantry Units, were taken from their respective Divisions and were gathered up to form the new 2nd Waffen SS Panzer Division, AKA "Deutchland".
Preparing for an invasion of England that would never happen, they were instead, moved to Eastern borders of Germany in prepartion for Operation Barbarossa, the Invasion of Russia. Due to his well liked manner, reliability, efficiency, and expeirence, he was promoted to Hauptsturmführer (Captain) and was given command of a Panzer Company that consisted of several Mark IV's Panzers, the new versions of the Mark III's after evaluations by High Command during its performance in Poland and France.
The Campaign in Russia was at first, a cakewalk. There was little or no resistance as the 2nd Waffen SS Division moved towards Mosocw. However, as the German Army advanced, it found its momentum slowing down due to massive numbers of the Soviet Army they were facing and the slow trickle of supplies, replacements, and spare parts for their tanks. By the end of December 5, the German Army was stopped in its tracks, unable to move forward and take Moscow. Additionally winter was approaching, and Horst Von Epp found himself, along with his men and tankers, freezing in the deep cold.
When the Soviets counter-attacked and created the disaster of Stalingrad, Horst's Unit was sent to the front lines with the mission of breaking the circle trapping the 6th German Army. Despite their brave attempts, they failed miserably, partly because they were attacked and faced with the new T-34 Soviet Tanks, a far more superior tank than the Mark IV tanks they had, which out-classed them in every category.
By the time they were within sights of Stalingrad, Horst's unit was so badly damaged that High Command ordered them to retreat, having lost several tanks and having a pitiful amount of tanks left. This along with the already dwindling support of Infantry and supplies made them a easy target to the advancing Russian Divisions.
Horst, along with several officers and including their CO, ignored the order from High Command and remained where they were, creating a static defensive perimeter around them and buying enough time for several units of the 6th Army to get out of Stalingrad before the gap was closed.
When the 2nd Waffen SS Division could not hold any longer, Horst's Unit retreated, along with the 2nd Waffen SS Division, back to the German line, abandoning several tanks, most of which included the Mark III's and the Mark IV' that proved inferior to the Soviet's T-34's.
Injured in combat, Horst Von Epp was given a Iron Cross for his bravery along with his men, and was promoted to Sturmbannführer (Major).
Meanwhile, still recovering from his wounds, the Russians on the other hand began to advance towards Germany, starting with retaking back the territory lost to them by the German Army. In 1943, they managed to capture the City of Krusk and Hitler, scandilized at the failure of Stalingrad, iniates a counter attack.
Following Horst Von Epp's recovery and return to his unit, he was greatly surprised to see new improvements made to the Mark IV Panzers, along with two new Panzers, the Panther Mark V and the new the Tiger Tank.
As one of the Panzer Divisions to receive this tanks, the 2nd Waffen SS Division rode out, along with several SS Divisions and Wehrmarcht Units, towards Kursk.
It was a fierce battle and what transpired there would become one of the greatest and largest tank battles in history.
In command of a Tank platoon, with one Tiger Tank and three Panther V Tanks, he lead his unit flanking left of the Russian positions in Kursk, attempting to encircle the Russians and give them a repeat of Stalingrad. However High Command had underestimated the number of tanks the Soviets mustered during that battle, and Horst Von Epp's Unit found themselves in a sea of tanks, duking it out with one another in the great grass plains, forests, and urban enviroments.
Horst managed to knock out 16 T-34 tanks before his Tiger Tank succumbed to the rounds fired by the other remaining T-34 tanks and he retreated for repairs while his second in command led the attack. While undergoing repairs, the German High Command realized they could not prolong the battle and they eventually retreated, pulling out their Units much to the disgust of Horst, the SS and the Wermacht Units involved in the fight.
After the Battle of Kursk, the Battle lines stabilized, with neither the Russians or the Germans able to penetrate each others defenses. The fighting stopped for now and the 2nd Waffen SS was given leave.
Horst Von Epp found himself resting idly and doing some war games with his Unit, unknown that in the following months of 1944, Operation Overlord would strike in Normandy. He was 24 years old.
