Adolphus Hofmann was born as the First World War drew to a close in 1918. He lived in the middle of Berlin with his mother and father. He had a brother who died when Adolphus was one. The cause is unknown and ever since Adolphus has been spoiled and looked after much better than most German Families.
Sadly this period of Being spoiled ended in 1928 when his father lost his job. He had just enough money to supply food within a year and Adolphus had to help out and go begging and occasionally do some errands for the local community.
His father continued to search for a job and in the end he managed to get a job as a soldier in the German army. The job didn't pay particularly well but it did bring in enough money combined with Adolphus and his mother's money from begging and doing errands, to supply food.
Life from then on was hard. The family was scraping a living off the kindness of others and minimum wage with a job that meant potential death if not careful. It was now 1939 Adolphus was now 21 and had tried and failed at many jobs. These ranged from a shop clerk to a farm hand. He had decidedthat the best option now was to join the army alongside his father. This decision had come after a lot of discussion with his mother and father in the little time of leve he had. As July approached Adolphus enlisted himself into the army. he was placed in the 2nd SS Division.
In the opening months of the war during Germany's conquest of poland Adolphus' father was killed. This devastated Adolphus' mother and being alone as a woman in Germany with no husband wasn't good. Especially as she had no chance of getting a job. This drove her to commit suicide. Adolphus was devastated as in a matter of weeks he had lost his whole world. His mother and his father were now both dead.
He fought bravely throughout the rest of the war and he fought on D-Day he was lucky to escape the allied assault. He had been taken back to the camp after his whole platoon had been killed and he had found a working telephone and called back. He had been sent taken back to be reassigned to another platoon and continue fighting. He ended up staying there for longer than anyone had anticipated and helped the general plan his tactics during thebattle which he then relayed back to the front line using some radio equipment. He was not skilled at this but had managed to work it out after some things had been explained.
As the war drew to a close he escaped from the army and moved to Austria and lived there until he died.

The polish air was cold around Adolphus and he rubbed his hands together and breathed into his cupped hands. He knew he was behind enemy lines and he had to get back to the front lines. He walked along among the ruins that surrounded him. He could swear that he could hear footsteps and every now and again m he might see a flash of movement and would point his gun in the direction of the movement.
Finally he got really annoyed e=with this and decided to take a look.
'Wer ist dort!' he shouted 'Ich sagte wer ist dort!' he paused. 'Sie haben bis drei, um herauszukommen! Ein...Zwei...Drei!'
No one came.
He decided to start walking away and as he did this a young Nazi soldier stepped out of the ruined building.
'Hans Möller schade antwortete ich nicht!' the Nazi replied.
'Kommen Sie mit mir, und wir werden versuchen, zu den Frontlinien zurückzukommen!'
They carried on walking side by side reassured by each other's company. They reached the front lines to find that the battle was over and that the Nazi's had won against the Poles. There were none left. Everywhere he looked there were corpses lying on the floor bleeding. Suddenly a Polish man jumped out of his trench and shot Adolphus' companion before the Pole had a chance to shoot Adolphus he had a bullet in his chest and was clutching his chest.
