Character History:
- Peter Bloch grew up in Holland in the mid 1920s, Holland was a glorious land in those days, before the Nazis invaded and started to take over complete control of the beautiful land. He grew up amongst people who were kind, lovely, and joyful, everything seemed great. His parents were Daniel and Aaf Bloch, they both ran a shop in Amsterdam, a food shop that a lot of people went too and that they were well know all over the city. “The Bloch’s food shop if the best in the whole city…” was what some people said and they could have been right, but that is just being biased now…
Peter loved going to the shop when he was a bit older, he used to sit behind the counter and watch as many people came in to buy their food for the week, by the age of 13 he could recognise nearly every person who came into that shop and what they were going to buy.
When the war broke out across Europe, Peter was 16, he had been supporting the Dutch military when the Germans invaded the Netherlands in the Spring of 1940, when the Dutch military where over powered completely by the German army, Peter began to hate those German people, the Germans began to take over the whole of the Netherlands, suddenly, the peaceful, happy life of old had changed to become a life of hell and killings and bombings and fear. It seemed like God if there even was one, was trying to ruin the world, Peter used to pray at night when it was silent, that the Germans would go away and stop killing and hurting their friends and neighbours.
It seemed as soon as the Germans had invaded and occupied the country, they started to round up the Jewish communities, in Amsterdam there was a big Jewish population and many of the Bloch’s friends were Jewish, this being so, the Bloch’s started to take in a few Jewish people that were fleeing the Nazis, hiding their friends the Polshes in the cellar of their shop, right deep down under the street. The Polshes were a well respected family in the times before the Nazis occupation, they ran a barber shop just along the street from the Blochs but of course, they were forced to shut when the Nazis started to close the shops of the Jewish. Peter’s family kept their shop open to Jewish people, but the Nazis told them that if they did not shut their shop off to Jews then they would all be shot so in the end the Bloches had to stop Jewish people coming to their shop.
Now, Peter walks the street, scared as hell that a Nazi would some how read his mind and find out that he has Jews hiding in his attic, all in all he is so scared, he wants the allies to come and rid the world of Germans…Nazis even…

Stay calm and low Peter…calm and low…” that was what Peter Bloch was telling himself as he walked along the street that was full of people walking one way or another, it was midday, a Friday, the sky was clear and blue. Everything seemed normal, if someone had taken a photograph of the street, it would have looked a normal street and not in the middle of a War. But sadly, the photo would have been ruined because there were Nazi flags and soldiers in Nazi uniform walking through the crowd, with guns and hard faces, staring at everyone. Peter walked along, he had been sent to collect clothes from a clothe shop a few streets away by his parents for the Jewish family living in his cellar, he was freaking out slightly, clasping his hands tightly together as he walked.
”HALT!” a cry of German came from behind Peter, he stopped in his tracks and turned around to face a German soldier’s stiff hard face staring back at him. ”GEKOMMEN!” the German pointed to Peter’s chest and then to his own side, Peter came towards the man, terrified.
” Fallen Sie Ihre Taschen aus” the man ordered, pointing to Peter’s coat pockets, Peter did as he was told, a piece of paper fluttered out of one and on to the ground, he bent down to pick it up but got a hit and nearly fell over as the German snatched the paper and scanned it, ”was ist dieses?” the German spat.
Peter averted his gaze to the ground, the paper was a list of clothes of the Jewish – Polshes – family, they had a young girl of 6 years old who needed new clothes, it obviously said small dress on the list.
”Es ist…een het winkelen lijst.” Peter did not know the word for shopping list in German so changed to Dutch as he spoke; he bit his lip, glancing at the man. The man gave him a smirk and threw the piece of paper back at Peter, pushing him away and walked off, Peter grabbed the paper and hurriedly walked down the street, that had been close…
