Howard was in a jeep up until they where 300 meters of the hill. He started running in the cool mornig air as it bit at his cheeks and ears. Now, it is about 2 hours later and he still cannot find the American medical unit. He pulled out a pair of binoculars and looked at the hill, and saw Germans crawling all over it. He decided to turn tail and run all the way to the nearest Allied camp which was the American 1st Armored Division. He started off when he heard yelling in German. Howard decided to take his chances and stop moving and turn to the German soldiers. When they got near him, he said in German. "I'm a doctor, let me help your wounded, and for helping your wounded could you let me go." The Germans replied "Ja!" Howard then went up the hill and started looking at the wounded. He got two other German medics to help him. When Howard was done he stepped away and gave a Lucky Strike cigarette to the wounded men and to the medics. After that he walked away toward the Allied line. When he was walking back he had the feeling some soldiers were following him so he started to run only to knock into an American Sergeant. The Sgt. said, "You the Limey doctor we been waiting for." "Yeah" was the reply from Howard.
