He wasn’t really sure what to do. The man had broken down and Casper was hugging him; wanting him to be strong. He needed protecting as much as Casper did. He felt the man’s breathing calm and he un-wrapped his arms slightly, looking down at what Jace was doing. A sign and an arm on his shoulder and the words: “We’re free Casper.” – A whisper.
”Yes....yes we are.” Casper breathed, a few tears coming down his face as he realised just how big the statement was. For the first time in years they were free – free to do what they wanted; free to speak and say without getting beaten up. Casper could be who he did not have to hide it away. Never would he take an order from scum like Kaiser again.
His eyes met Jace’s and he gave him a reassuring smile. ”I am not feeling too good actually.” he shuffled back and realised just how much his head was hurting. ”My head hurts.” he muttered, grasping it slightly. He was wounded – he needed sleep but for that few minutes Jace had been the important one. He stood up, swayed slightly and stumbled over to the bed. He collapsed on to it – the pillows were soft to his tired head. He sighed, pushing his body up a bit as best he could.
Darkness had taken hold in the house, the only light now was streaming in through window from the low moon. Jace was standing at the end of the bed as Casper crawled in and he helped the boy with the blankets. After a moment Jace turned and walked towards the door, he looked back over his shoulder for a second before pushing open the door, the mess from their meal was still scattered around the room. He passed it and went into the kitchen, collecting two fresh bottles of water. He walked back out into the room and picked up his bowl, there was still a little warmth left in it so be scooped out a few bits of meat and ate them before placin the bowl back down and returning to the room.
He crossed over to the small bed side table and placed a bottle of water on it for Casper, making sure the lid was partially open so he didn't hurt his hands trying to open it. Then Jace went over to the window and pulled the thin curtains closed. It didn't do much but the room seemed a little darker. He turned to leave but stopped. He looked over at Casper as the thought of Freedom came through his mind again. With a little hesitation due to how he acted earlier Jace moved closer to the bed. Slowly he sat down on the mattress and placed the water bottle on the floor at his feet before laying down and stretching out on top of the blanket next to Casper. Eventually he relaxed drifted off too sleep.
(If you would like to end it here ignore the rest of the post.)
The sky was begining to lighten as the sun started its journey through the sky. Jace had been awake for almost an hour before dawn and as the darkness was pushed back he climbed out of bed. He looked down at Casper, unsure if the boy was still sleeping or not. In either case Jace quietly left the room and began packing. He found a couple bags and stuffed them with as much food and water as he could. He took the bags out to the car and loaded them in. He took a quick look around inside the car for anything useful, in their haste to escape from Kraiser they hadnt been able to take a proper inventory of their equipment and supplies. Jace was feeling good today, he didn't get much sleep but he felt invigorated.
He returned to the house and took up his weapon. Cocking the bolt back and inspecting the breach before snapping it forward again. It had a full clip and now had a round in the chamber. Searching his other gear he was only able to find one more clip for the 98k. They wouldn't be fighting a war with that. They where in desperate need of ammo and another weapon for Casper. When the boy woke up have would ask if he had any spare ammo somewhere. Highly doubtful, but there was not harm in asking.
Outside a boot crunched down on the gravel footpath and Jace dropped down the floor. He crawled forward as voices started drifting through the wall, they where loud and slurred. Jace reached a window and peeked out quickly, spitting two men outside taking and swaying from the booze. Jace dropped down and retreated to Caspers room to wake him, thy had to get out, or there'd be trouble. But jus as Jace got through the door he heard the front door open and jace froze, his weapon ready as he waited and listened.
Sleep had washed over him so quickly that he had barely noticed it come. He was asleep like a light being switched out. He did not notice Jace leave the room and then come back. He did not notice the man sleeping beside him like old times. He dreamt happy dreams for once - not full of knives and death but of happiness such as the sun and summer days and places where death and destruction would not enter. This was one of the first times such dreams had occurred and he was glad.
He awoke just as Jace closed the door of the room. He rubbed his eyes and glanced at the window where he could see the sun through a gap in the curtains. It was rising slightly – dawn was breaking. The first thing that hit him was his aching body. He looked down at himself under the bed covers and realised just how injured he was. Lying back weakly on the pillows, he listened to the sound of Jace sorting things out next door. He could lie here forever; no people to disturb him with Jace to look after him...for a while at least until he got better.
This fantasy was shattered completely as he saw Jace re-enter the room, his gun and rucksack in hand. What was he doing? The boy then heard the sound of the front-door opening. Oh god. No no no! Frantically, the boy heaved himself out of bed and stumbled, catching himself as he felt his leg give-way. He glanced over and saw his shredded jacket of his uniform was lying on a chair – Jace must have brought it in. He grabbed it, rummaging through the pockets – or what was left of the pockets – and found a few spare bullets; put there after training one day.
”Jace.” he muttered, showing him the bullets. ”Here.” he then glanced at the door, and then at the window. He stumbled over to it and looked out – the window looked out over a small garden and he could see a gate set into the garden fence. ”Jace.” he glanced back at him, pointing to the window frantically.
What would happen next flashed through Jaces mind as he accepted the extra few precious rounds from Casper and pocketed them. The door explodes into splinters and ignites into flames as Jace charges forward, his scythe like bayonet striking out with the speed of a possessed cobra, it's deadly point hungery for the flesh and blood of men. The two pathetic drunken mendicants looking up in horror as the personification of death himself towers above them. Their slurred crys for mercy and prayers to their Beloved god dribble from their lips as they stair into the cold abyss of Jaces eyes. They knew that this would be their last day on this earth.
Jace his name drifted through his mind and the images faded, what the hell was that? He crouched there stunned for a moment at power of the images that had filled his mind. He turned slowly to Casper, his face covered in sweat from the heat of the fire. He looked at the door, it was still intact, nothing was burning. He didn't understand what had just happened.
He got up slowly, not out of caution but out of confusion and made his way over to Casper. He looked out the window and saw what the boy had in mind. The road was right there, they could just open the window and make a run for it. Jace looked back at the door, the drunken men where having a loud conversation. It would be easy enough to just open the window and sneak around the side of the house to the car. Jace had a strong urge to go out and kill the men but at the moment he didn't trust himself, not with the images that had flashed across his mind.
He nodded to Casper and set his rifle down so he could open the window. He locked it open and climbed out before grabbing the weapon and pullin it out with him, he crouched down and started making his way up the side of the house towards the road, he looked back to see if Casper was ok before standing up and walking as calmly and as casualy as he could over to the car, he got into the drivers seat and turned the ignition then drove the car over so so Casper could jump straight into the passenger seat. Once the boy was in he took off down the road to safety.
(incase you didn't know, this sotuation has messed Jace up quite a bit. He's basically Split personality type insane now)
He was worried. Jace seemed to hesitate for a second. He looked confused. Something was up but Casper was too worried about the intruders to let it worry him too much at the moment. Then Jace turned to him and Casper saw sweat dripping down his face. Gosh, what had just happened? Was he okay? He was being so slow and careful for an odd reason. Casper put a hand on his shoulder to reassure him.
Casper then followed him out of the window and closed it shut from the outside. Jace had already made process down towards the car. Casper followed after him, trying to look calm and collected. He reached the car, seeing Jace already in it and got in. The car then moved off and they left the house behind them. He didn’t know where the drunks were and frankly he did not care.
The car sped along. They were speeding past lanes and other houses. The car turned down a few more lanes. They were far from the camp they had been. Casper wondered where they would be going. He had no idea what Jace was up to. But at least they were away and out of another danger.
The road was rough and Jace found I hard not to speed along it. As it was the trip was probably causing Casper a great deal of discomfort with his injuries. But at the same time he wanted to put as much distance between them and that house in the shortest time possable. As they drove Jace found himself wondering what had happened back in the room, why he had seen what he had seen. He could tell it hadnt happened but it had felt so real. Would it come back? His head was clear now and be felt the sweat drying on his face. Hopefully it was just a passing thing.
As they drove Jace looked over at Casper, checking for any fresh injuries and to see how the boy was holding up. "Are you ok Casper?" he asked after a moment. Their wouldn't have been hard to reopen a wound or two when he climbed out of the window. That house had been a mess and had looked like it was diserted, obviously it wasn't but in the future they would have to be more careful. "Next time we hide in a house we'll have to make sure that it is abandoned before spending the night, we may have to keep watch too... When your properly healed that is." Casper would need a lot of rest to get over his wounds, no doubt the boy was tough, as an SS soldier he had to be. But he had lost a lot of blood, and the meager meal jace had been able to cook up would not have given him much strength.
Jace was quite for a while before he realized he didn't know where they were going. He didn't even know where they were. He slowed the car down and glanced at Casper. "Do you know where we are?"
