Dieter was standing in the middle of a vast desert, the horizon changing each moment when heat rose up from the sand, making the reality twist and ripple around him. Sweat was dripping down his back and he was squinting, trying to focus his eyes on something that seemed to be approaching him from the distance. The figure was just a black mass and the heat made the image change from that of a person into a camel and then maybe into a Blitz truck. Dieter took a step forward, the golden sand spilling over his boots, as if the desert wanted to devour him.
He could now see that the figure was a person and as the person got nearer, Dieter saw that it was a woman with blonde hair and slim figure. She was waving at him, smiling and yelling something he could not quite make out. It was as if they were words of some foreign language that Dieter did not know, yet he had the feeling he should have understood them. The only thing he could really focus on right now was the fact that the young woman was wearing a white dress, it's thin canvas hugging the feminine form tightly, the hems of the dress flowing in the wind. He felt a drop of sweat make it's way down his cheek and he tried to say something, he had a feeling that the girl would just vanish if he didn't speak soon. The girl laughed at her and stopped some distance away from him, a look of disappointment appearing on her pretty face and then she turned away, starting back towards the direction she had arrived from. Dieter opened his mouth, but no words would come out until the name of the girl suddenly came to his mind. Dieter tried to follow the girl, but the sand held his boots down fast and the only thing he could do was to shout the girl's name in hopes of stopping her. "Lisa!"
Dieter was brought back into reality by a harsh yell and his head jerked up, the man almost fumbling off the chair he had been sleeping on. "Auf Wachen Deutsche Soldat!" said a familiar voice and Dieter blinked his eyes a few times, looking dumbfounded as he could not quite remember where he was and what had happened. Yes, he now remembered he had stayed at the cottage to watch over the girl, who now... was wearing his helmet and pointing the corporal's own rifle at him. The girl was speaking in a firm tone now and telling Dieter that he would take her to Germany, that Dieter would say that he had captured the woman as a partisan and that he should not try doing anything funny.
Although Lisa told Dieter to move, the German still stood at his seat and stared at Lisa, not quite believing what she was saying. With a raise of his eyebrows, a small smile spread first across the corporal's face and then Dieter broke out into a hearty laugh. "Lisa! You scared me for a moment! That's very funny, I like you!" Dieter remarked, his shoulders slumped as he laughed. The man rubbed his eyes with a hand as he laughed, but when he noticed that Lisa was not actually laughing with him, his amusement slowly subsided. The laughter faded away slowly along with Dieter's smile and the man blinked. "What? You are not serious, are you?"
A slow feeling of dread gripped Dieter and he glanced at the rifle, then at Lisa. "Lisa! Bist du noch zu retten? Wie konnte ich Sie nach Deutschland bringen? Ich muss zu meiner Einheit in weniger als einer Woche zurückkehren, ich kann nicht nach Deutschland gehen. Ich gehe nach Afrika! Geh schon, ich lache mehr nicht sogar. Wenn ich dorthin rechtzeitig nicht ankomme, werde ich ein Verräter Deutschlands und ein Fahnenflüchtiger gekennzeichnet! Oh, Gott verdammt!"
Dieter got slowly up from his chair and faced Lisa, his blue eyes squinted slightly as he regarded the girl. "Would you have it in you, to shoot me? Hm?" the man asked, changing into German once again.
As the corporal was talking, he took another careful step towards Lisa and raised his hand slowly, ready to take hold of the barrel of the rifle if Lisa was ready to let him. Dieter's blue eyes met with Lisa's gaze and the corporal raised his eyebrows, pleading for the young woman to give up the weapon. "Lisa... Come on."

"Are you insane? How could I take you to Germany? I'm due to return to my unit in less than a week, I can't go to Germany. I'm going to Africa! Come on, I'm not even laughing anymore. If I don't arrive there in time, I will be marked a traitor of Germany and a deserter! Oh, god dammit!

"I helped you! Well, at first I shot you, it's true... but let's be fair, you stole my motorcycle! Besides, what are you going to do? Point my own rifle at me the whole way to Germany? Maybe keep that knife of yours handy in case you want to stab me to death? Then half of the Wehrmacht will be on you. You are not going to make it to Germany or even out of this town like this. There are other ways. Let's talk about this, all right..? You are not thinking straight, it's the drugs affecting you."
