Brandon closed his eyes at the news of their deployment. He felt as if someone had just kicked him square in the stomach and for a moment he thought he would lose his lunch. He opened his eyes and looking down into the face of Serano who was only 5' 6" he nodded slowly.
"Yes Staffing makes a good point." He said in an almost hush tone.
He was scared to the point of nausea but he couldn't let his subordinate see that. He had to be strong for each of them when they needed it. The last thing he could be was a Non-Com with a wimpy disposition. He cleared his throat he tightened his grasp on Serano's shoulders.
"Ok get back to barracks, if you haven't eaten hit the mess hall. Then tell everyone in the squad to do the same. Make sure you all find the munitions officer and get what ever reserves you can manage. Set aside some time to get your life insurance policy just in case. Then take a nice hot shower...don't rush through it who knows when the last one we get will come. Make sure you finish all your letters home but remember not to much information or you'll get chewed again. Finally get an early sleep. Remember the next time you sleep on a nice bunk could be months." He finished with a reassuring nod.
"O and remember to make sure everyone else does." He added letting go of his shoulders.
Serano nodded and ran off as if Brandon's orders were chasing him like a rabid animal.
"Poor kid's jumpier than a rabbit in hunting season..." Brandon commented frowning.
Brandon then collapsed to a sitting position his head in his hands. There was 6 men whose lives were in his hands. One bad command he could get them all killed. He looked up and gazed into the horizon. The sun was beginning to set as Brandon looked up at Staffing.
"Six men in my command...and all I can do is try to make sure they make it home." He said in distraught manner.
As he lowered his head again he let out a deep breathe.
"Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true." Brandon sang almost whispering.
These words were from a movie he had watched with his little cousin and the rest of his family right before leaving for the military. The words themselves now seemed so far away.
