Jack threw himself to the floor as a hail of MG42 fire erupted into the building. He heard Tom scream out and he quickly rolled, seeing blood fly through the air as Tom took two bullets into his arm and upper torso. He crawled over and sat himself with his back against the wall between the windows they had been stood at. He gripped his rifle tightly and held it at an angle downwards of his shoulder. He span around slightly and pulled the rifle up into his shoulder and squinted down the sights. In the moonlight, he could make out a definite shape of a machine gun barrel which was smoking slightly. He could see a body moving behind it and he aligned the stumps on his barrel with the torso of the man. He squeezed the trigger and got behind his cover again before retaliation shot could be fired. He quickly pulled on the bolt to pull another bullet into the chamber.
"Tom. Go and get as much distance as possible. I'll cover your retreat and follow on in two minutes." Tom and David broke into a run out of the building as Jack shouldered his pack. He looked around the floor for anything that could be used and his eyes settled on a grenade. He carefully walked over to it, thinking Tom must have dropped it, but as soon as it was in his hand he realised he was mistaken. It was a rock, but a very convincingly grenade shaped one. A plan slowly began to unfold in his head as he tested the weight. No shots had come back to the window and Jack decided it was a risk worth taking. "Fire in the hole!" he screamed as he threw the grenade with all his strength. It landed near the feet of the German installation. Any soldier with any experience on the battlefield would recognize the cry made by one throwing a grenade, and in the darkness, it should make a convincing grenade. Nathan turned and sprinted towards the staircase and then out into the night. Now where the hell is our pick-up?
