Daniel breathed a sigh of relief as no return fire greeted his recent attack. It appeared his attack must have been a success. Just then rifle fired a single bullet, but it only pinged harmlessly off the concrete bunker. These guys aren’t very good shots he thought to himself. Then a couple of harsh German words were shouted and a sudden flurry of movement appeared in the trees. ”Don’t shoot!” Daniel called out to the trigger happy men around him. ”They are pulling back!” he said triumphantly.
A single soldier stepped forward. Daniel gave McClosky an odd look; they were retreating, so why would this single German soldier be surrendering? His breath caught in his throat as the figure stepped forward into the open. ”It’s… a kid…” McClosky breathed. Daniel glanced at him to see him turning white. If this guy was a kid… then were they all young? McClosky had shot one of these soldiers dead. Daniel too felt a bit of the colour drain from his face. ”Take the gun. Give him a squirt if he tries anything.” Daniel muttered to McClosky. Daniel picked up Braeburn’s fallen M1 Garand and pulled himself out of the trench. He cautiously stepped across the sand toward the curious little child who spoke perfect English. As he reached the rifle the child had been carrying, he kicked it back towards his own trench.
He stood in front of the boy and stared at him. What was that sticking out of his pocket? Daniel reached forward and slowly took hold of the book, being careful to stand to the side of the boy, so McClosky would have a clear shot. He glanced at the front cover before putting it in his own pocket. Aksel Bavenn was printed on the front. Was it the boys name? It appeared to be a diary of some kind, but maybe it could be of some use.
Daniel stared disgustedly at the boy again for a few seconds before he reached out a hand and pushed the boy towards the sea where his comrades had just run to. Just in case he didn’t get the message, Daniel then gave him an even harder pushy. Daniel watched to make sure the boy went the right way and didn’t try anything and he then turned around and walked back to the trench. He had to go get a medic.
