Heiko winced a bit when the leader of the SS men revealed his rank to be that of a senior NCO. He may not like the SS, but he had enough sense to show repect for those of superior rank regardless of their organization.
"Entschuldigung, Herr Sturmscharf. Ihre Hilfe ist sehr willkommen." Heiko handed off his canteen to the SS grunt and Reipold shuffled over to hand the man his as well. The senior sergeant threw a smoke grenade and the grunt ran out to the stream. Heiko couldn't see any movement on the other side of the stream. A moment later Busse rounded the corner with concern written into his face.
"Was ist heir los? Ich habe der Rauch gesehen und habe ich heir gekommen."
"Nichts, Busse. Komm heir." Heiko dismissed the man's worries called him over before turning his attention to his superior, "Wenn ich darf, werden meinen Männer und ich drüben das Flüsschen gehen zu sehen das andere Gebäude an. Dein Mann kann unseren Feldflasche später zu uns bringen" The sergeant nodded and Heiko once again addressed his small patrol. "Busse, bleib heir und behalt das Fenster in deine Augen. Als wir drüber sind werden, komm sie auch. Riepold, werden sie mit mir kommen." Both men nodded and took their positions. Busse moved around the back of the chicken coop, crawling out just far enough to view the window of the opposite building, and Riepold followed Heiko to the corner of their building.
Before moving Heiko took a moment to make sure all his gear has securely fastened and checked Riepold's as well. Satisfied, the sergeant gripped his MP40 and braced himself for the dash across the stream.
"Los." One word and the pair took off across the dry grass toward the hay bales with Heiko in the lead and Riepold just a meter behind him. The water wasn't all that cold was they splashed through the sallow stream and didn't do much other than wet their boots and the bottom of their pant legs. The two skidded into place behind the first bale they came to.
Heiko looked over toward where their run had began and watched Busse lift himself up and prepare himself for his own dash across. Heiko thought about popping off a few rounds to cover the corporal but decided against it as it made draw unwanted attention to the man gathering water for everyone.
As Busse approached, Heiko waved him off to the next bale.
"Hol Ihren Atem. Wir werdern das Gebäude in ein Moment prüfen."
Translations:
"Entschuldigung, Herr Sturmscharf. Ihre Hilfe ist sehr willkommen."
- My apologies. Your help is appreciated.
"Was ist heir los? Ich habe der Rauch gesehen und habe ich heir gekommen..."
- What's going on? I saw smoke and came here...
"Nichts, Busse. Komm heir."
- Nothing, Busse. Come here.
"Wenn ich darf, werden meinen Männer und ich drüben das Flüsschen gehen zu sehen das andere Gebäude an. Dein Mann kann unseren Feldflasche später zu uns bringen"
- If you don't mind, my men and I will go across the river and inspect the other building. Your man can bring our canteens to us later.
"Busse, bleib heir und behalt das Fenster in deine Augen. Als wir drüber sind werden, komm sie auch. Riepold, werden sie mit mir kommen."
- Busse, stay here and keep your eyes on the window. When we are across, you come too. Riepold, you are coming with me."
"Hol Ihren Atem. Wir werdern das Gebäude in ein Moment prüfen."
- Catch your breath. We will check the building in a moment.
