You can never be mean with characters, it is by definition impossible. Just like in life, characters go through hardship and must suffer the consequences, often dealing with the aspect of death during such times.

A character shouldn't have life's paths strewn with rose petals and pretty ponies. That is dull, boring and stupid. So my personal opinion is - go for it. I am certain many future plots will develop through this new and exciting twist.

I think it's a really good idea. Would give a whole new side to his character if he had to face real hardship. It would also be interesting to see who would turn him in and, ultimately, how his incarceration would affect those who know him.

I agree with Victoire, go with it.
