"Look buddy, I'm not to good with emotions. I'll tell you this, when you decided on your own to join the Military you became a man. It was your decision and you are facing the consequences of that decision alone, that makes you a man. You know as well as I do that sitting here sulking about it isn't going to change anything but you can't go looking right now I believe."
"Yeah, I know, I know." Stephen muttered, shrugging a bit. "I've been told that before." he said, and looked at the sergeant, hearing what he said next.
"Feel like going for a run to help settle your head? Whether isn't great but, if it ain't raining, it ain't training.".
Stephen looked out to the rain, yes it was coming down, but he did feel like a run, "Alright then." he said, nodding and standing up, wiping the tears away from his eye, "I might as well get wet."

"That's the spirit." He turned towards the track and stepped out in to the rain as if it wasn't even there. This guys gonna be alright. "Try not to leave me behind and I'll buy you a book of stamps, deal?" He said it in a way to keep the mood light. He hoped the Private would accept. He would probably by him two books of stamps he he could outrun McMillan. McMillan was in good shape but the rain made him a little stiff. "Better stretch out first, don't want to cramp up out there."

"Try not to leave me behind and I'll buy you a book of stamps, deal?"
Stephen laughed, a smile spreading across his face, he went out into the rain, it poured down, but Stephen didn't really care anymore.
Stephen stretched out, he had been a good runner and had been fit because of working on the farm with his father all those years ago, and had to work hard. He finished stretching then looked at McMillan.
"Alright then." he said, the smile growing bigger by the minute, he wiped some wet hair out of his eyes as he spoke.

"Glad to see you smiling." McMillan was in high spirits by the time he was done stretching and didn't even want to work out, just have a bit of fun. "Run often?" He waited about a second and a half after asking and took off as fast as he could while screaming "Two laps... I'll race ya... it's only a half mile!" his voice trailed off as he stretched his lead. He meant no harm nor to be a bad sport, just figured the Private would laugh and try to catch him out of fun, nothing else.

Stephen heard McMillan speak again;
"Run Often?"
"No..." Stephen said, quickly but before he said that, the sergeant had run off into the distance, Stephen smirked as he heard what the man said and sprinted after him.
His legs got splattered with mud as he ran through the rain, the sergeants figure getting ever closer.
After a while he mangered to catch up with him, falling into stride, panting slightly.

McMillan was glad to hear he kept a light heart about it. He was surprised to hear him coming up rather quickly. Just after the half mile mark the Private caught him. "Looks like you... have some ability... over there... but how long... can you... keep it up?" McMillan was genuinely impressed at how quick the Private gained ground for McMillan was no average runner, he had kept in pretty top shape most of his life. He could keep a full sprint for almost a mile if he needed to, so he picked up the pace a notch, not too much but he wanted to see what the young man had in him. "Stay with me now!"

Stephen had caught up with the sergeant, he was panting hard but still had some running in him. He looked towards the sergeant.
"I dunno, I'm have to see!" he said laughing, seeing the sergeant speed up abit, he sped up as fast as he could, taking over slightly. He wasn't going to talk cause he would lose breath. He just ran there, his breath coming in slowly gasps.

Well look at that, McMillan thought to himself. "Why you... sly devil... you!" He didn't expect a response, never did when he was running and the Private looked to be giving a good bit of gas if not all of it. Better stay close, if he slacks up any I'll yell at him a little to keep him trying. His clothes were starting to get a little weight to them now but not enough to affect his speed. Mud was kicking off the back of the Privates soles, so far none in the eyes, but plenty elsewhere. They had completed almost a lap and a quarter now, these are the few moments that keep you going out there in the real muck. Better enjoy them while you can.

Stephen laughed, a smile spreading across his face as he feet hit the ground, he was starting to slow down as they nearly reached two laps, it was because he had run fast at the start to catch up and had lost a bit of his energy as a result.
They were close to the end, Stephen sped up towards the finishing line, laughing and wiping his hand across his face, moving so he could get his hair out of his eyes.

"Keep it up now!!" He yelled at him. "Don't quit now!!" He knew the finish line was coming quicker than he would be able to catch the Private, but it didn't bother him, he knew if need be he could keep this blazing pace another two laps, maybe longer if the enemy were running behind him. But Colly wasn't the enemy, quite possibly the farhtest thing McMillan had from it. As his new buddy crossed the line, McMillan two steps behind him, McMillan said "Good run, good run, not many men can keep that kind of pace for near that long. I'm impressed." He didn't want to ruin the good moment so he figured he would bring him the stamps tomorrow. "Well after all that I'm kinda hungry, what say we get cleaned up and go for a bite at the mess hall, my treat." He said with a big laugh. as he slowed down to a walk.

Stephen slowed down to a walk also, putting his hands on his knees, breathing steadly, he stretched quickly, a smile spreading over his mud splattered face, he looked down at himself, yes, he was very muddy.
He looked back at the sergeant as he began to speak; "Good run, good run, not many men can keep that kind of pace for near that long. I'm impressed." And then said "Well after all that I'm kinda hungry, what say we get cleaned up and go for a bite at the mess hall, my treat."
Stephen laughed and then nodded, "yeah." he mangered to say through his gasps for air then spoke again. "That would be great! Really, really, really great!" his face lit up.

"Alright then. I'll see you in a few minutes outside the mess hall, probably gonna be a late breakfast but more than likely it won't be too busy in the mess hall." As he walked by the Private he wipped his hand in the young man's hair, just water, no mud. "You're going to be alright man, alright in my book anyway." He said with a grin across his face.
