Character History:
A member of the New Zealand army on attachment to the UK infantry forces, Nathan is a skilled rifleman. Highly loyal to is friends, he would quite happily 'jump on the grenade' to save his comrades.
Growing up in a small rural community, he often went hunting with his father, using rifles from a young age. On his sixteenth birthday, he joined the infantry in 1936. After three years in New Zealand, he was presented with the opportunity to serve in the UK for a five year attachment. When war broke out, he was told that he was with the UK until it ended, or he died.
Military Rank:
Corporal
Writing Sample:
Nathan stopped as he crawled through the French undergrowth. Acting out as scout, every sense had to be fully alive. That crunch, could it have been something innocent, a cow walking through the fields perhaps, or maybe something worse, a German sniper maybe. He held his position and opened his mouth slightly to better his hearing and nothing more was heard. Double checking the bolt on his rifle, he crawled forward to his recon point.
He put his hand round the back of his belt and felt for the binoculars. German forces were suspected to be holed up in the farm in front, and Nathan slowly observed the windows. He was on the verge of leaving when he heard a crunch of feet on gravel. He looked down into the farm and let out a small smile as a German officer stepped into view. He replaced the binoculars and turned to begin the journey back to base.
Stopping slightly to get a drink from a canteen, Nathan heard the sound he had been dreading all afternoon. The slow and accurate scrape of metal on metal that must surely be a German sniper. Trying not to make any sudden moves, he looked around for the source of the sound while checking the safety catch on his rife was off. A small flash of light came from a tree, reflected off an optical sight that would indicate a snipers rifle. He was lucky though, the sniper was facing the road, and Nathan took his chance. He brought the rifle up to his chin and looked carefully down the sights, lining them up with the unhelmeted head of the sniper. He squeezed tightly on the trigger and watched as his target fell from the tree. Bringing another round into the breach, he broke into a run as he neared his camp.
