Slowly the sun arose in the east. Werner knew that this was going to be another terribly hot day. Yesterday he even saw a tank crew making fried eggs on the armour plates of their Panzer III. Thinks like these were only possible in Africa.
At least the last night brought a bit of refreshment, although the Germans couldn’t really enjoy the cold because of a heavy artillery bombardment. Three German soldiers got heavily wounded by shrapnel’s. The artillery shells were targeted very good and most likely the Brits had a spotter somewhere, directing the fire. Werner thought to know, where. There was a small farmhouse directly behind the British positions. At least he would use it as an observation post. And Werner quickly learned that the Brits weren’t that stupid also. But one thing was absolutely clear, the observation had to be stopped or the next nights wouldn’t be more quite.
Werner looked around for one last time. The ambush on the farmhouse was ordered for five minutes after five o’clock. His nerves were on the edge but he tried not to show his fear to his young soldiers. His whole squad was ready to attack the British outpost. Werner took a last sip of water from his canteen. He remembered how he felt, minutes before his first experiences with an enemy who was shooting back. That was quite different to the trainings on the shooting ranges. But now there was no more time left to practice. The ordered sign to signal the start of the ambush was two red flares.
About five minutes were left now to the given time. Werner crouched carefully into the trench and sat down next to private Sturm, one of the best and most reliable soldiers in his squad. “Glaubst du, der Tommy wird uns heute einen heißen Empfang bereiten?“, asked the private. Werner answered: „Freuen werden Sie sich nicht. Aber wenn schon, aus diesem Farmhaus müssen wir Ihn heute einfach rauswerfen. Wird schon klappen.“
But suddenly their chat was cut off by two red flares ascending into the sunrise behind the group of soldiers. The signal to start the attack was given.
Translations:
“Glaubst du, der Tommy wird uns heute einen heißen Empfang bereiten?“
“Do you think the Tommy is going to give us a hot welcome?”
„Freuen werden Sie sich nicht. Aber wenn schon, aus diesem Farmhaus müssen wir Ihn heute einfach rauswerfen. Wird schon klappen.“
“They won’t be happy to see us. But what are the odds. We’ll need to kick them out of that farmhouse anyway. Good luck.”
