"Nur eine Minute, dann habe ich zu laufen..." Klaus thought to himself, exhausted and sitting in a small shack, the resident of which was either dead or had fled. There were no windows, and only one door that he kept only slightly ajar to check every now and then for an enemy soldier sneaking by. He kept repeating his mantra to himself over and over again, with it having no effect on his mind, which told itself to stay put. His eyes began to fade, knowing he had to get moving soon or he would be out like a light. He nearly fell asleep for a moment, and would have fallen asleep if not for the poorly constructed shack.
Raindrops began to fall from the narrow cracks in the roof, and while they were not heavy rain, they were enough to keep him awake. Klaus both despised the cracks in the roof for denying him the much required sleep, and thanked the cracks for keeping him awake and ready for battle. Even though the officers had promised a major victory, the truth was that it was not looking entirely good for the Germans. The Allies had essentially taken Point Du Hoc, and the few remnants of the German troops sticking behind were being decimated.
For a few precious moments, Klaus forgot about being a soldier. He looked out the door and saw peaceful nature, marred by the contrasting attribute of the bullets and bombs going off in the distance. Before, Klaus was initially unsure of the military, but at that very moment, something inside him make him realize these necessary horrors that plague nature, and felt proud to be a person helping to end it as quickly as possible.
Klaus decided to stand up and pace around the empty shack, taking a few sips from his canteen. He decided that he needed to get moving soon, as while he could stay for as long as a few hours due to the fact that he was ahead of a large amount of the retreating German forces, he would rather arrive early to help those ahead of him clear a save path for whatever supplies or armor that had to be moved in a pinch.
Before moving, however, he decided to check his supplies and make sure he had everything ready for whatever was to be ahead of him. He slowly took an inventory of his items, and while he promised himself he would leave right after taking inventory, he intentionally did it slowly to prolong his stay at the shack. "Gewehr? Definitiv hier. Knife? Let's see ... hier. Die Rationen sind alle hier. Kantine? Ich wünschte, es wäre voll, aber hier. Shovel ist hier. Überprüfen ammo ... gut, das ist alles da." (Rifle? Definitely here. Knife? Let's see... here. Rations are all here. Canteen? I wish it were full, but here. Shovel is here. Checking ammo... good, that's all there.) he very softly told himself, and this process continued with all of the little items he had in his Backpack.
Klaus finished taking inventory. He smiled and prepared to depart from this safe haven with all of his equipment in tow. He slowly started to gather the items he had lain out on the floor in a very precise order, for the sole reason of wasting time doing something unimportant. He was essentially stalling himself from embarking on the trek along the muddy roads.
