Siege of Tobruk

After a brutal chain of defeats, the British were forced back into the small Mediterranean port of Tubruk, where a long siege began. After six months of long fighting, the British troops finally beat back their German attackers.

Alam el Halfa

An all out attack made by the Desert Fox took place here, where he attempted to envelope the British Eighth Army. If he failed, Axis victory in North Africa would be impossible.

Kasserine Pass

A great victory for German forces, the experienced Afrika Korps inflicted heavy losses on the untested American forces. This was the first major battle which American troops took part in, and they paid heavily for it.

Operation Torch

An amphibious assault launch by Anglo-American forces into occupied Morocco and Algeria, this could be considered a predecessor to D-Day. Vichy French resistance soon crumbled, and territory was quickly gained.

Mareth Line

A long defensive line constructed by French troops before the war, it fell into Axis hands after the Fall of France. It was then used to defend against British forces.

A large tank battle between US and Axis forces, this was the first time a US force had decisively defeated a German unit. This was also one of the first major battles of George Patton.

Gazala

This battle took place six months after the siege of Tobruk, but was only miles from it. After a series of victories then defeats, the British Eighth Army was pushed back yet again by the Desert Fox.

El Alamein

The sight of two major battles, the second was a turning point in the desert war. Commanded by Field Marshall Montgomery, the British and Commonwealth troops fought hard and defeated the Axis forces in the eastern desert.

Halfaya Pass

A huge defensive position, this was an area of natural protection, but it was strengthened by Rommel creating a great anchor. Mines, barbed wire and 88mm guns were all used, making a very had position to crack.
