	City of Warsaw The final Polish stronghold, many of the cities occupants armed themselves against the German assault. 	Lublin-Brest Offensive A huge push made by the USSR in 1944, its aim was to clear German troops from eastern Poland and apply more pressure to the Germans after the fighting in Normandy. First to fight, the German invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 marks the starting point of the Second World War in Europe. Several weeks later, a Soviet invasion from the East doomed Poland's flagging defense against the Germans and her allies in the West. Site of viscous fighting between German and Soviet forces as well as active resistance by the Polish against both sides throughout the war.
