North Africa The deserts of North Africa were of great importance to both sides of the war. For the Axis powers, North Africa offered a pathway to the oil-rich Middle East. For the Allies, it provided a potential springboard into Italy, the "soft underbelly of the Axis". |

Italian Mainland and Sicily Germany's largest ally, Italy fought as best as its poorly led and equipped armed forces could allow. Though the nation capitulated to the Allies following the loss of Sicily and an invasion of the mainland in 1943, German forces, along with some Italian units still loyal to her, quickly occupied the nation and made the Allies fight tooth-and-nail for the next two years through the hills and mountains of Italy all the way up to the end of the war in 1945. |

Germany The heart of the Third Reich. Germany, and her capital city of Berlin, was the ultimate goals of the Allied powers and to that end it's industrial, cultural, and politically significant sites became targets for Allied bombing campaigns as well as major ground offensives late in the war. |

Poland First to fight, the German invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 marks the starting point of the Second World War in Europe. Several weeks later, a Soviet invasion from the East doomed Poland's flagging defense against the Germans and her allies in the West. Site of viscous fighting between German and Soviet forces as well as active resistance by the Polish against both sides throughout the war. Sub-boards: Open Area, Westerplatt, Mława, Tuchola Forest, City of Warsaw, Węgierska Górka, Kock, Siege of Lwów, Lublin-Brest Offensive, Vistula-Oder Offensive |

Balkans and Central Europe An oft overlooked portion of conflict, many Balkan and Central European nations began the war as allies of Germany, with Romania of particular importance to Germany for her oil fields. Through invasion and repeated coups, these nations were subjected to brutal violence, changing hands often and seeing a myriad of resistance groups spring up that fought each other as often as they fought their German and Soviet occupiers. Sub-boards: Open Area, Streets of Prague, Metaxas Line, Jassy–Kishinev Offensive, Mountains of Crete, Vevi, Hills of Thermopylae, City of Belgrade, Streets of Tirana, Siege of Budapest |

Scandinavia Prized by all sides for their mineral wealth and strategically important location, the Scandinavian countries of Denmark and Norway were subjected to invasion and occupation by Germany, while Sweden was threatened into neutrality. Meanwhile Finland managed to pragmatically play all sides to maintain her independence, coming to blows with both the Soviet Union and Germany at various points. Pacific Theater The Pacific War. Regarded as a backwards region fit only for exploitation by Western nations, the fledgling Empire of Japan shook that perception to the ground in late 1941 by tearing into the Asian imperial holdings of France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. Four years of warfare defined by viciousness and brutality followed, with fighting stretching from India to shores of Alaska as the old empires struggled to contain and push back their new Asian competitor. |
